Problem with instalation Rapid Restore

#1 Post by Jarno » Fri Dec 10, 2004 7:58 am

I have T40 2373 42G with Win XP SP1. I tried many times to install IBM Rescue and Recovery v2.00.0170 from
http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.ws ... g=en&cc=US

I always get Windows Installer Error 1722:
"There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."

I tried to update BIOS and Embedded Controller Program. But nothing changed.
Is there anyone who is able to solve this problem? Thank you.

Have you uninstalled (not just disabled) all third-party system software that's running silently in the background, like anti-virus scanners, Norton GoBack etc. before trying to setup R&R?

I didn't try it. So I'll try it. Thank you for your suggestion. :)

Yes, I tried to uninstall all background software and I also tried to install this update. But it's always the same. Any other idea? Thank you.

Jarno, I'm having a similar problem. See the thread I started at http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=6249. If you find a solution, please let me know. Thanks.

OK, thank you for reply. I have one question: do you have on your HDD original hide partition from IBM?

I thought this could be the problem, because I deleted the hidden partition. Now I know this is not the problem. On some other forum about thinkpads somebody wrote me that it can be problem with MBR. But I really don't know.

Is there anyone at IBM who can be contacted about this issue? I find that when I call the regular IBM support they do not really take software problems seriously, they just say reinstall everything, so I'm hoping to find some kind of support at IBM dedicated to software problems. If anyone knows of a number to call or an email address... Thanks!

Don't know if this will help but there's an update they just put up --

"This package fixes a problem where the system hangs without displaying an error message during installation of IBM Rescue and Recovery. This package must be installed prior to installing IBM Rescue and Recovery."

Thank you, but it didn't help.

Well, noticed your sig says you still use XP SP1, perhaps the new version of R&R needs SP2? A quick search on your error yielded this from Microsoft --

http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... -us;825038

Which points to program incompatibilities. If you haven't and want to install SP2, check the IBM website for some pre-install tips. I'd try calling IBM, if all else fails.

In my opinion this problem is related with the MBR. I had exactly the same problem. Probably it was caused using some partitioning SW like Partition Magic or Acronis. The only way I could solve this problem was doing a recovery from the bios or with the recovery CD's. As far as I remember the problem was caused by bmgr32.exe in c:\IBMTOOLS\utils. But I was not able to find a solution without recovery.

Thank you, I also have bmgr32.exe in c:\IBMTOOLS\rrtools\MBR_CLEAN. But I don't have recovery CDs so I can't solve the problem this way :(

Check your memory

I recently had a terrible problem trying to install to a blank HD with the recovery CD. Turns out I had a bad SODIMM memory chip. Once I took that out, it all went smoothly. So, take out all memory from the slot on the bottom of your thinkpad. It worked for me.

Seems this is, or was, a common problem to which IBM actually gives the solution to it in their "Deployment Guide"! Back-up all data first then use "Cleandrive.exe" (not available at link given) or any other application which will clean your hard drive and your MBR (I used "PowerMax available for download from Maxtor then install OS and all other Apps including Rapid Restore. Works perfectly! Happy Restoring.............

Error 1722 during R&R install on T40

#18 Post by Fud4sale » Thu Feb 24, 2005 1:01 pm

Jarno,

I don't pretend, well okay I pretend, to be good at this sort of thing, but I did get past my problem with the Error 1722 message and failed installation last night. It was a complete "laying on of hands" approach, but since is seems to have worked I thought that I would pass it along.

After trying the install from every concievable location (USB drive recieved Tuesday from IBM with the software, the installation CD that came with the USB drive, and a downloaded program from ibm), I searched the hard drive for files containing ".msi". That seach identified lots of files, mostly in the "C:\IBM TOOLS" folder, but it found the R&R installation software in "C:\Windows" and, while screaming "be healed" I double clicked that file in the search results and the program regained its eye sight and its leprocy was curred.

Now that R&R is loaded, that file is gone. Hope that helps.

I'm pretty sure that IBM's Rescue and Recovery Version 2 deals with the partition issue automatically, because I had a similar problem on a 2nd hard-drive, and once I got rid of Version 1 of RAR, and installed Version2, the problem was resolved.

Here's the link to the new version:

no, this issue isn't resolved in the latest version. Unfortunately.

Did you try?

IBM knows about the 1722 error. Call them.
