WinXP SP3

#1 Post by riderz49 » Tue Apr 29, 2008 5:20 pm

SP3 is supposed to be a roll-up of all the fixes since SP2 plus a bunch of other improvements or enhancements.

My question: should I uninstall those prior fixes before installing SP3? If that's not necessary, won't there be a lot of duplication, or does the SP3 install automatically sort all this out?

As always, a new SP will add stuff to your pc, not duplicate the existing ;)

I already found that MS is not correct on their minimum requirements: you can not install SP3 on a pre-SP1 XP machine. So you'll need at least SP1.

Just a tip for those fresh installs.

SP3 is a great boon if slip-streamed into a WinXP CD as it reduces the update time by quite a lot, compared to a Windows XP SP2 installation and the subsequent update regime.

Get a copy of nLite, the WindowsXP SP3.exe and your Windows XP CD and make a slip-streamed ISO and burn it to a CD. You can then do a repair installation and avoid having a lot of temporary files installed as you would with a straight upgrade to WinXP service pack 3. Upgrades normally leave some temporary files and backups behind as a matter of course.

I've completed a "clean" installation using such a CD and a (dirty) repair installation and found no negative issues.

Service Pack 3 for WinXP should pose no problems for most users unless there are issues with some really obscure software programmes (I haven't seen any at this point in time).

Don't worry about it, it looks OK thus far.

I've been looking for the contents of SP3 - the hotfixes that it includes but unable to find any information on this. Is there a site that lists all the post-SP2 hotfixes included in SP3?

Thanks

Steve

Thanks,

Yes, I've seen this and been following up regularly hoping for some more in-depth information as to what the SP3 contain in terms of post-SP2 hotfixes. Nothing in there about that.

You can google where you can download it. It's also available now on Microsoft's website.

For those of you using nLite, make sure to use the
latest version v1.4.5 beta 2 before you slipstream.
