Suspend to RAM often doesn't work

#1 Post by feklee » Mon May 26, 2008 12:32 pm

Most of the time Suspend to RAM doesn't work under Vista on my T61. I always keep the system up to date using Windows update and the Thinkvantage update tool. I don't fiddle with drivers - everything is standard.

What could be the reason?

Could it be VMware Workstation which I run almost continuously with one or two virtual machines? The few times, I had it turned off, Suspend to RAM worked fine, but sometimes it also works fine even when VMware is running.

Hm, maybe I should reinstall (would be a PITA, but one gets used to it - sigh). However, if I reinstall, I would like to go for Vista 64bit (to make use of the 4GB RAM in my machine). Does anyone know what's the price for an upgrade from 32 bit Vista Business to the same version in 64 bit?

no price difference. You can just get 64bit media and use your same key you have now. Microsoft offers "alternate media" but you just pay shipping i think. That or you can probably just download one and use that.

as for STR, well that i'm not sure about. I don't use it so i guess it's hard to figure that out.

Thanks for the info. I just found a thread were the alternative media solution was discussed (shame on me for not searching before posting).

Conserning Suspend2RAM: Are there any log files that one can inspect. Suspend to disk takes ages, so that's not a solution.

well you can always check the event viewer. STR aka SLEEP should work but if you have some old drivers that's usually the reason. Drivers prevent/allow the system to go to sleep as the instruct their devices to enter low/off power mode. If that's not done then the machine wont sleep. The biggest cause is usually the display drivers but it could be almost anything.

The event viewer should tell you what's stopping it.

Just checked the event viewer: Nothing interesting AFAICS. Only one warning related to DHCP. I still wonder whether VMware Workstation could be the culprit. In the VMware forums there are people reporting problems, though different ones, related to Vista + Workstation + Suspend2RAM.

Can I use the Vista Premium DVD to install Vista Business?

No, that DVD is customized to only installed what's written on the disc. Just like you can setup auto install scripts, that's already done for that disc. You'd have to get a generic disc or download one and install using that.

Ah, OK. I was asking because I faintly recalled hearing that the key decides on what version gets installed and that the disk actually conatains all versions. This must've been a misunderstanding then.

no it's true. The key does decide what gets installed, this is however on editions that are generic. A retail DVD labled BASIC wont allow you to install Ultimate even if you have a Ultimate key. It wont give you the option to choose which to install as that's blocked off and just typing in the key will only work for basic keys.

A generic DVD comes with all options and you can install any from it. Even the Euro "N" versions and Starter editions. YOu don't have to use your key just yet either.

I've found that especially after SP1, old apps break Vista. If you start with a clean install, then load each old app ONE at a time (with backup after each) you'll find that sometimes, simply installing an application or a hardware driver causes the machine to either not log off, or not shut down, or restart to a blank desktop, or do any of those three terribly slowly.

I didn't believe it until I started doing some terribly tedious diagnostic reinstalls, and I'm building a pile of "software I'll neer use again" as a result. Oh, it runs just fine...as long as you never need to start or shut the computer, much less suspend it.

And sometimes, when you've installed something and then UNinstalled it because it didn't work out? The system is still corrupted, and you can't be sure of a stable system unless you had a backup and do a restore (or at least use a retore point) to make sure all the trash is out.

NT never was this fragile before. NT is supposed to blow away non-compliant software--not the other way around.
