Updates of all sorts FAIL and BLOATED sensations

#1 Post by charredii » Wed May 28, 2008 3:40 pm

somebody please help:

I cannot make any updates to my system with System Update 3.14 or Windows Update. I've tried for a long time now to put .NET Framework 3.0 onto my system and that has failed. System Update will run, but everytime i run it, it offers the same updates and seems like it's not actually doing anything.

Windows Update doesn't do anything, it always says it fails to install updates

The only way seems to be manually downloading and running .exe updates (but that hasn't worked for .NET stuff).

My installation of windows seems to be extra bloated as well. I don't have that much stuff, but windows is taking up 70 gigs on my my 80 gig hdd. My Documents, Program Files and WINDOWS directories are all about 6-8 gigs each, so I don't know where all my space has gone.

Any help would be great

Install .NET V2 first, then the update for V2, and then V3.

Skip version 3.0, it is marketing fluff only. Real "version 3" is called 3.5. In any case, System Update is written in 2.0 so this version is ok. I recommend to install 2.0 SP1:

32bit http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en
64bit http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en

What is the exact Windows Update error ? Starting with XP SP3 you have to add "http://*.update.microsoft.com" to Trusted Sites to get it work.

thanks guys.

It's my automatic updating...it causes the computer to hang when i try to shutdown.

When I try windows update, it says

Security Update for Windows XP (KB924270)

failed to install

Error Code: 0x8007F0DA

System Update doesn't work either...

Which why I tell everybody who wants to hear: do not ever allow any program or OS to run auto updates. First thing I do whenever I install a new program is to hunt for its update function and switch off the auto update. Same with Windows. I hate giving control of my computer to some corporation through some anonymous server in another country. In a laptop it is even worse: it's portable so you want to be able to log off, shut the machine down and walk away with it umpteen times a day. Which is a problem if you're logged on to the web over your friendly coffeeshop's wifi on Patch Tuesday and M$ decides you need 85 GB of Windows updates and patches...

A computer is a tool. If it works, why change it? Because mr. Gates' minions say so? Imagine having to 'repair' your hammer every time you need to hit a nail... :?
