System Update hangs - Added Type and S/N

#1 Post by chadwicktr » Sat Jun 07, 2008 3:39 pm

I had my personal T61 serviced at a local IBM repair center in Raleigh last December. They replaced the mobo, but they unfortunately forgot to add a type and s/n, so I've been unable to use system update since that time. I finally got around to buying a USB floppy drive so I could set my type and s/n on the new board. I was able to succesfully write the information (the warranty auto-detect feature now works on lenovo's support page) but my System update is still not working. When I run system update it will hang at one of three places and either freeze up or say there are no available updates. I've un/re-installed and its still not working.

Do you guys have any idea of what to try next? I've not updated drivers since Jan, so I would really like to get this working.

Thanks,

CT

You need to install .NET Framework 2/SP1, or better, install V3.5 which includes the V2/SP1

Even if you successfully reinstall System Update 3, it is still a quirky piece of "software," euphemistically speaking. I've updated it several times in the past few months, and it still offers updates that either have been previously installed or are not appropriate for my T43.

Until Lenovo fixes SU3 -- if ever -- your best bet is to manually download and install what you need for your T61:

Chad, it gets worse. I'd also have to say SU is unstable. Twice, i've had it hang during self-updates and been unable to rip the [censored] thing out OR upgrade or heal it. Reboot while the moon is full and uninstall it from the Control Panel (if you can!) and then reboot again and then manually download and install the newest version. Which may or may not work properly afterwards.

Some things just need to be more robust, I don't need "helper" programs going unstable on me, I could look for updates and download them myself without that risk.
