Vista install to replace Linux on T61

#1 Post by satih » Tue Jun 10, 2008 2:18 am

Hello everybody,

I have a Vista buiseness from my university, so I want to order a T61 thinkpad with Linux instaled on it, to avoid paying for Vista.

Are there any problems to install Vista on T61? What would I need except the Vista DVD? I'm pretty much an average user, so I don't want to get stuck with too technical stuff, and a dusty, unused laptop :)

The OEM cost for a Vista license is pretty low. I think I have heard $50 or so. In any event, the human time cost to get a different OS, then retrofit exceeds the savings involved. That is true for me at least, and just my own opinion. YMMV. ... JDH

I second what jdhurst said. Due to licensing issues (thanks to Microsoft) computer manufacturers cannot discount the pre-installed Linux machines enough to actually make it worth buying them if you already own a MS OS license and want to use it. The $50 or so you save isn't worth the time and hassle that involves in making a clean MS OS install completely work every time you have to do it.
