what is UP with SEARCH?

So, trying to use VISTA search to perform some usual tasks.

For example, every once in a while I use SEARCH on XP boxes to find whatever files are taking up so much space.

Setup a search, DATE MODIFIED AFTER X, SIZE GREATER THAN 1000KB, ALL FILES, SEARCH EVERYWHERE, GO!

With VISTA SEARCH, I get results of like 1 random file on my desktop.

WHAT IS GOING ON? DO I REALLY have to put *.* in the search box?
