Yes, it's good news, but 2014 we'll be running 4 or even 8 cores and 64-bit OS by default, and XP will be just a nice memory, but until then… And I wouldn't be surprised that in 2014 Vista SP4 becomes what XP is now, if Windows7 fails like Vista did… M$ almost always failed with pre-SP OS…

which is journalistic exaggeration.

Microsoft Life Cycle policy has been (since at least 2002) that product support will continue for 2 years after its replacement goes GA. It will then enter Extended Support, which may last up to 5 years.

Therefore, once Vista shipped in early 2007, it was always known/stated that normal support for XP would run until April 2009 and Extended Support until April 2014.
