KB951748 Problem

#1 Post by Nick Y » Wed Jul 09, 2008 2:38 am

Just had an automatic update from Microsoft giving me several updates including KB951748 apparently designed to stop spoofing via DNS.

It not only stopped spoofing, it stopped everything related to the net until I removed it. I had the net connection working immediately prior to this update and fortunately I was able to check on another laptop, not yet updated that all would be OK without it and the KB number to uninstall.

Yep, same problem here.

It certainly affects ZoneAlarm, who are currently looking into the problem.
Recommendation from them is either,
a) Remove the fix
b) Leave the fix applied but run with Internet security level set to medium in ZA.

Don't know if any other Firewalls are affected.

I have ZoneAlarm running, so perhaps that is the problem. Thanks.

It installed yesterday on my TP via AutomaticUpdates, no problems at all, I'm not using ZoneAlarm (Commodo is better for me)....

Face it guys, DUMP that ZA, it's a piece of crap!
Best free (!) alternative: Online Armor from http://www.tallemu.com/free-firewall-pr ... tware.html

It can run circles around Comodo, without any of the Comodo issues!

^^^
You can get a pretty good idea here:
http://forums.comodo.com/help_for_v3-b105.0

I wouldn't go so far as to say Online Armor will "run circles" around Comodo, but Matousec's most recent firewall rankings give Zone Alarm a "Poor" rating. I agree: dump ZA.

I have the latest versions of Comodo running on a 1999-era 500MHz P3 desktop and an IBM T43 laptop with no issues. Whether you encounter conflicts depends largely on the other software installed on your system. And that holds true for any good firewall.

Can you explain this, what problems did you have with it? I'm using it with no problems, and it's not just firewall (it protects registry and folders that you specify, so nothing can be installed without permission, among other things)...

Yikes guys, I spent 2 hours this morning trying to get online even though last night all was fine; and yes, as soon as I woke up the T22, I had an Automatic Update to install, so I installed it. Then I tried to go online, nothing. I also run Zone Alarm, but an old version. I will try to dump that update and check it out. Thanks!

EDIT: I just removed the update specified by the OP and Firefox fired just up. Amazing. thank you

I also just got an important update for Zone Alarm, wonder if that is to correct the Microsoft update problem; I didn't take the ZA update yet though.

Same thing here. I decided to lower ZA's security level down to medium rather than uninstall the update. The net came back instantly.

Well, although CMP works on my TP and desktop with no problems, I can see why you don't like it  ...

To the OP, thank you for posting this info. :)

I am using ZA and no doubt I would have had problems if I had installed this update.
