Vista Business vs Vista Basic on X61?

#1 Post by tselling » Wed Jul 09, 2008 9:17 am

I currently have Vista Basic 64 running on my X61. I could upgrade it to Vista Business 64.... but don't want to bother with the hassle of reinstalling my applications unless it will give me something worthwhile.

My X61 is used at home mostly for browsing the web and playing a few games. I occasionally watch TV programs with MythTV Player. I also use puTTY and UltraVNC to access my MythTV server, and Filezilla to access my XBMC Xboxes. And I also do a little Python script work on occasion.

Would battery life be the same? I ask because I saw something about the Mobility Center on a Vista 64 comparison and there was no checkmark for best choice for laptop.

So would there be any benefit for me going from Vista Basic 64 to Vista Business 64 on my X61?

I always subscribe to the belief that if your PC is doing what you need it to then there's no need to mess with anything. There's a little checklist here if anything jumps out at you as something you want:

You shouldn't have to reinstall your applications. Only if you have Vista Home Basic N should you be more wary. Here are some links that may help you make a decision.

Before you upgrade, close all open programs and save open files. The upgrade setup application will reboot your computer several times, so any unsaved work will be lost.

Except for when upgrading to the Windows Vista N editions, the upgrade process preserves your settings, programs, and saved files. As a standard precaution, we recommend that you back up your computer.

If you have a Windows Vista N edition, Windows Vista will be reinstalled during the upgrade. Your settings will be erased; however, your programs and files will be preserved. You should back up prior to upgrading.

Shouldn't be the N edition since its the 64-bit anytime upgrade DVD (I did a clean install using the activation info from the X61 32-bit preload). But I guess there's not really anything I need in the business edition. I was trying to compare Mobility Centers but they seem to be about the same.

I have Vista Business 32 on my R61 and Basic on a cheap desktop. The only real difference I see in daily use is the ability to store network passwords in my user account, which makes it easier to connect to a NAS drive.

Plus Aero... BFD.
