T40 hangs on startup at AccessConnections window +
Hello all,
My daughters T40 (w/WP Pro) has a developed a disturbing problem. On startup, it hangs at the user log-in window, with a second smaller [IBM Access Connections.. Connecting, please wait] window.. it just hangs, all day and all night, trying to log-in I guess. I cant get past it. It does it also when I try to log in as Administrator in Normal mode. If I go in thru Admin Safe Mode it loads ok. I've gone into AccessConnections profile to try to find something that says Dont Load on Startup but I cant find anything like that.. I just cant find how to disable Access Connections profiling. And turning off the wifi card doesnt help.
Other crazy thing.. When I can get in, in Safe Mode, and go into User Accounts, I dont see my daughters Limited user name listed anywhere. If I try to create a user with her name, it says there is already a user by that name. I want to change her settings from Limited to Admin level.
If I create a new user, it does the same thing, hangs at the log-in window, cant get past it in Normal mode, safe mode gets by ok tho..
Oh, I cant get to Admin Tools to Restore to an earlier point either.. thot I might be able to go back as far as I could to find a point in which it worked, but daughter didnt tell me when it started doing this, she'd just shut it off and do something else..
So, anyone know how to disable the AC profiling at boot-up, or get her name to show up in User Accounts so I can up her Admin level?
Thanks
TJ

There seems to be more wrong with the setup than just Access Connections. I have not seen a valid case of not being able to see a user when an administrator. Try logging on as administrator in regular mode (not safe mode) and see if you can see the user. Also try uninstalling Access Connections to see if that helps. If that works, try installing it again. ... JDH

Hey JD, thanks fer the reply.. and the first problem rears it's ugly head again... In normal mode, I can't get past the Connecting, please wait window, for ANY user, Admin included. The only way I can get into anything is thru Safe Mode.. if I try Safe Mode w/Networking, I get the same hang up at Connecting, please wait, so I cant even get in to uninstall it. And Safe Mode doesn't let me uninstall anything, I get the you dont have sufficent priveledges to do thtis, so Admin, even in Safe mode is boogered up.. If I go into Control Panel, Users, Change way users log on and try to force Admin mode, I get " a program has inhibited the Welcome screen, remove the program to get it back, tvt_gina.dll is the file assoc with that program" Well, that tells me its an IBM software program/problem, but I still cant get to it.. I click on Thinkpad Configuration, but it never loads. I really think there is some nasty trojan, or virus doin' this... soooo.....
I'm copying all that she wants to keep onto an external drive.. if I cant get a fix for this soon (next couple days).. I'm just going to reformat/re-install... 'bout due fer a re-install anyway.. it's been almost a year since the last one
Thanks for the tip tho JD.. I appreciate it very much.. I was hoping someone has seen this before, or knows the path to take, prior to reinstalling XP..

You might try using msconfig to configure the Start up items.
Start in Safe Mode, Admin account. Go to Start menu, then Run... type in "msconfig" (no quotes).
In the window that opens, go to Startup tab and disable Access Connections, or anything associated with it... ie, ACTray, etc.
After that try restarting... in Admin account, Normal mode, and see if you can get to the Desktop.
Good luck!

Thanks, tried that early on, thinking I could bypass everything entirely, but it was always enabled, and even disabling the wifi card in the bios did nothing, still hung up on trying to connect, but executive decision this afternoon.. I decided that it was too boogered up to try to fix.. I've been trying to get it to continue past AccessConnex for several weeks now.. and pretty much had just had enough foolin' with it.. so, 'got everything needed copied onto an ext HD, did an R&R using the Recovery disks, I'm finishing a fresh, clean install, SP3, AVG, ZoneAlarm, and last XP Updates and it'll be finished in 'bout an hour.. so thanks everyone for the help.. this way I know it's fixed
