Please help Window file system

#1 Post by akhavan » Wed Dec 22, 2004 7:55 am

Hi,

I have T41P everything is working fine. But today I decided to use the 'Tools' > 'Error Checking' 'Check file system on C:' and I clicked 'Automatically fix file system errors' and 'Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sector'

Once the window booted all I got was 'Can not open the file for direct access' and then it would boot normally to window.

I tried it couple of times and each time I got the same message.

I had a ghost of my disk but it does the same thing so it has to be some software problem.

I used Hitachi DFT in advance mode and both drives were OK.

I also ran window system file checker and there was no error. The disk management says the disk is healthy (system)

It seems some program access the window at boot up. Anybody has any idea what to do?

Sounds like you need "fdisk /mbr" (in DOS) - that should repair the Master Boot Record and get you started again...

OK I found out what the problem is.

I uninstalled Norton Internet Security 2005 and everything is OK. Apparently MS has fix this problem with SP2 but I have not install it yet so I do not know if the problem is rectified or not.

Can any one with Norton Internet Security 2005 and SP2 verify that the problem is solved or not?

Also anybody with Norton Internet Security 2005 but not SP2 (like me) verify that they have the same problem?

Thanks

Update

The problem is resolved I reinstalled the Norton Internet Security 2005 and everything is as it should be.

The first time I installed Norton Internet Security 2005 I was connected to network but the second time I disconnect everything from my T41P. it seems it has done the trick.

I did not think it would make any difference when you install your software if you are connected to network or not but apparently it does.
