SP3 messing with sound??

#1 Post by joester » Sat Jul 19, 2008 1:46 pm

1.) This was just extrordinary timing, or just plain weird.
2.) Can Microsoft do this?

I recently was using my 600X (2645-3EU with WXPSP2) and in mid use, the update notification shield popped up telling me an update was available.

I should note that I am configured to download and inform, not express install.

I was out in the back yard, and kids were in the pool, ect... didn't notice that the sound was GONE untill I came inside. I had checked out the update (SP3 now available to install) but not allowed it.

On checking the device mangler, I noticed a BANG next to the audio device listing. Properties informed me I had a code 1 error, not configured correctly.

Messed with it for several hours. Not fixed. According to Lenovo, the audio device uses WXP imbedded drivers, but repeated attempts to uninstall, restart, load drivers deemed fruitless.

Nothing to lose, so I allowed the SP3 update.

VIOLA!!!!
Drivers reloaded, and I have sound back.

Anyone else lose sound like I did? Before you go completely nuts like I almost did, try the SP3 update... I guess???

I don't want to even think they can disable your sound to force this update  I got the notification about SP3 but chose to not take it and to never notify me again, but I still had sound. Very weird.

This is for sure a coincidence. I guess the SP3 updated/reinstalled something that corrected a issue so the sound returned. Why the sound stopped working is hard to tell, but Microsoft does not intentionally break the sound or anything else to force a SP3 update:)

I would hope not.

It's just weird that the sound went away the same time the update downloaded, and that it came back after I tried EVERYTHING before allowing the SP3 update to install.

I reflashed the BIOS, tried a "repair" with an XP disk, uninstalled the device and rebooted, tried the W98 and NT drivers, NOTHING worked.

...but now it works so I guess I can't complain.
