Upgrading Vista business to Ultimate on T60 using upgrade CD

#1 Post by hamoudi » Thu Jul 24, 2008 5:35 am

I have a Vista Ultimate upgrade CD and i would like to ask if there would be any problems concerning activation since id be using the same Key of my Vista Business license?

I heard one can still upgrade even when using the old Business key.

im planing to make then my own recovery DVDs of the new upgraded Ultimate version, so would there be any activation probs when installing it again on the same laptop or maybe on another T60?

thanks in advance :)

With Vista, the key determines the Vista version that gets installed, not the installation DVD.
So when you say you have an "Upgrade CD", you simply have the one and only Vista installation DVD, which might be labeled "upgrade", but in fact isn't.

So if you use your "business" key, you will install business again.

To install "Ultimate", you need an ultimate key, of which there are several variants:
- Ultimate Full Retail key
- Ultimate full OEM key
- Ultimate Upgrade key
- Ultimate Anytime Upgrade key

So if you got a key along with your "update cd", that's the one to use when installing.
If you later install it again (due to recovery), you might have to activate via telephone, but this isn't a problem.

P.S. Actually I oversimplified: There are 4 different installation DVDs:
- Vista 32
- Vista 32 SP1
- Vista 64
- Vista 64 SP1
If at all possible, use the one with SP1 integrated.
