Wireless power settings control security issue?

#1 Post by beGi » Sun Jul 27, 2008 1:45 pm

OK, did anyone notice that when you log of within windows (XP), you can still control wireless power settings (BT & ABG) via Fn+F5 key. I do not use (or have installed) AccesConnections, just use Fn+F5 GUI.... Is it just me, or this is security issue? Can anyone confirm this?

I can confirm that the behavior are and always been the same on my Thinkpads. I don't see this as a security issues though.

In what way to you think of this as a security issue?

physical access to laptop = you're laptop's already in security trouble.

In case anyone's wondering, the general problem is either being able to connect via bluetooth (it usually doesn't have much risky services enabled) or trick the computer into connecting to some AP via wifi, then somehow getting in further. A) Don't enable insecure stuff on bluetooth, B) Presumably you have a firewall to protect the wifi, anytime it's used.

If the laptop is lost/stolen and those that find the laptop are able to startup the computer and see the Windows logon screen then the least of your worries is the possibility to turn wifi/bluetooth radio on/off before logon. To prevent such a rick use the BIOS/Hardisk password and if that's not enough use some kind of full disk encryption software.
