Internet Explorer Anamoly

#1 Post by corleone » Sun Dec 26, 2004 10:08 pm

Ever since I got my T42 i have noticed that it displays certain websites differently than on other computers.

For example, the most notable is that when i "Cache" sites on Google, rather than highlighting the "cached" words with a COLOR my browser simply BOLDS them. Similarly, when i use my STAT TRACKER for YAHOO Fantasy Football (which i believe is a java based aplet) It displays the aplet much differently than how it does on all other computers...

If anyone has an idea or possible sollution to this problem i would be really greatful... i just cant figure this out..

thanks in advance
C.

Yes, download Mozilla Firefox and never look back. It is a far superior browser to MS Explorer:

Trust us on this. Download Firefox. It's free and it works better and faster than Internet Explorer. The tabbed browsing alone is light-years ahead of Explorer.

As for the particular thing you are experiencing, I don't have any advice at all except to check the advanced configuration settings.

But seriously, get Firefox and spend a couple of hours with it and then decide if you'd still rather mess around with Internet Explorer.

Oh, and if you are using MS Outlook for email, download Mozilla Thunderbird and try it out for email.

The problem I keep running into when trying to get people to change to firefox/thunderbird is that they want to stay with the program they are comfortable with, even if the new one is better.
The arguement I use is " If this was the new version of Internet Explorer (or Outlook Express) you would accept the change and use it, Right? ". They usuall agree and still won't use firebird/thunderbird.
There are a few cases where some foolish web designer made a page that relies on Internet Explorer's non-standard functions and firefox won't cut it on those pages and that is the excuse people use to stay in the "comfort zone". As firefox becomes more prevalent these sites will go away. This situation is a lot better than it was a couple years ago.

It's really funny to see the browser trolling everywhere. If someone asks about IE, the only answer you get is: "use firefox". Let the people use what they want, even when firefox is better than IE in many ways.

Btw, I am using Opera since 5 years. Many features in firefox were invented by Opera, and still firefox has to catch up a lot.

Just one example for all us Thinkpad users using trackpoint instead of an external mouse: In Opera you can customize everything, also keyboard shortcuts. Since years I put the back button on z (for US keyboards it would be y) and the forward button on u. With this keyboard shortcuts you can navigate much fastern with just 3 fingers (one on trackpoint, the other two on y and u) of one hand saving a lot of time. Try it out, if you don't believe me. I am missing this ability of customization in firefox completely.

I've just started using Firefox and it is faster, 'nicer', easier to use, and certainly cuts down on adware, etc. But when I try and access the Automated Solutions at the IBM website, it will not work and says this is because I do not have Internet Explorer! Also, at Amazon, when I try and listen to the snippets of tracks for some CDs, Firefox does not start up Realplayer or Windows Media player, and so no music!

Anyone else find this? Is their a work around?

corleone, which version of Windoze/IE are you using?
Anyway, I would install the latest Sun Java and then in Internet Options, Advanced make sure "Use Sun Java...." is checked.
I used the whole M$ package (from work  ) but after @9 months of freezing, crashing and patches I dumped Office XP/Outlook/ etc. and have been a fairly happy Mozilla/Open Office user since.

Sorry if my earlier post sounded like a troll. It just hurts to see people......nevermind.

Corleone, have you done all the windows updates for IE?
That might help solve the problem. If that does not help then go to control panel, add remove programs, Internet Explorer, and try change, modify. there should be an option to repair IE or as a last resort remove IE and reinstall it.
Hope that helps.

Certain sites require IE.. as I mentioned earlier in this thread, install the "Open in IE" extension to Firefox to solve that problem...

music clips in Amazon, etc. will work fine if you download the plug-ins from Firefox....

@Leon: No success. Tried the extension, and the plugins (really downloads for Windows Media and Real Player), but nothing changed! When I try and play a sample CD track Firefox comes up with a 'save to disc' window, and the file to be save is hurl.exe - a DOS file!!!

Firefox has it's share of problems but it's, by far, a better choice.

Well I've done everything except re-install IE - I have XP sp2. But with the CD tracks on Amazon, I got it to work by using the RH mouse button, and selecting the 'Open Link Target in IE' option. IE pops up and so does Realplayer.

But what about IBM Automated Solutions - can you get that to work with Firefox?

Thanks,

Robert
