Ad-hoc wireless connection using 'Access Connections' tool

#1 Post by klokinou » Thu Aug 14, 2008 4:51 pm

Hi,

I use a T61p (permanently connected to internet via Ethernet cable) and a X60, both running on Win XP Pro with SP3.

I'd like to setup an Ad-Hoc Wi-Fi connection between both machines, so that I can access to internet on the second through the first one...

Could anyone help me to configure this ?

I have tried different HowTos referring to the management of the network through Windows, but without success so far. Anyway, I would prefer to use the Access Connection tool for that, if possible.

Thanks in advance !!

I had to go great lengths to create AdHoc network with Access Connections installed.

Problem is that the network interface is down until there are both computers trying to connect to the AdHoc network at the same time - then they see themselves and connect. If you can get it working through AC, it will be by selection the AdHoc profile in quick succession on both computers.
The one sharing internet should have IP address set statically to 192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0 and the other use DHCP to obtain it automatically.

As for the sharing itself, you mustn't have selected "Disconnect when changing location" (or how it is named) in your ethernet profile, so that it stays connected when you create the AdHoc connection. Then just open the properties of the Ethernet interface (under Network Connections) and select internet sharing. Do this before all attempts to create the AdHoc network, because this enable DHCP server allowing the other computer to obtain IP address.

Hi,

Thanks for the great tips and the link to the recent topic.

I guess I'm getting closer now, but when I try to connect to the 'Share' connection in AC, on the machine having internet, I get immediately a 'Connection failed' popup. When pressing the 'Help me fix this' button, it says 'Wireless Stack Initialization failed'... I checked my drivers, but they seem to be OK...

Any experience or idea about that ?...
