TPA31P or IBM and Norton Systemworks 2005 (Antivirus 2005)

#1 Post by friedrich-eugen » Tue Dec 28, 2004 6:29 am

Hello,

I had to upgrade to Systemworks 2005 (Premier) on two A31P, running XP and Windows 2000 (from Systemworks 2003/2004). Firewall in both cases is from zonealarm.

On both machines installation was ok, as I did not install Norton Gost or Go Back (I have Powerquest PQ and DI on those machines), but Antivirus seems unable to finish any system search successfully.

I do not think of viruses on those machines, as they were protected all along. I do think of incompatibilities and/or conflicts with hardware- specific software or a problem during installation. Up to now I have not seen any update dealing with that kind of problem. Symantecs website is awful, its robots (or faqs) do not solve any problem...

Has anyone any advice for me?
Has anyone similar experiences?

thanks in advance

Windows XP/2K, latest, Zonealarm, NSW2005, PQ PM&DI, IBM's Tools Office 2000, Adobe 6Pro, ... external drives, about 100k & 1.000k of files

Friedrich-Eugen,

I have a similar problem in one of my A31p machines. XP-Pro, Norton AV, PFW, GoBack ..

Sometime after I installed GoBack (which I have found much more useful than the similar functionality in WXP) my weekly ScanDisc (Norton) runs overnight and still not completed.

So I am also looking to info to understand this issue.

Hello,

I did reach symantec on the phone, luckily, only to be instructed to read the internet-info more carefully:

Norton Systemworks are to be installed after a "clean" reboot, by which symantec means a start without any (!) other programs active than a "naked" version of the OS either XP or 2K.

It is the first time, that I encounter such a procedure and I am not prepared to accept that as a standard: I do find it strange.

Following that advice is said to do the job. I have not yet tried to follow, but I will. Has anyone followed that advice before?

P.S.:
Ceterum Censeo: symantecs website is awful, its robots useless, its software - at least the last three versions - buggy/flawed still half year after first release ....

TPA31P or IBM and Norton Systemworks 2005 (Antivirus 2005)

Hello All,

After following the advice of those educated symantec professionals several times without success, I restarted googleing for "symantec norton 3019,6 (Error-code)". And I found a most interesting thread:

http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/r ... ~mode=flat

It indicates that Norton Systemworks (Antivirus) 2005 incorporates a small but obviously efficient bug to the effect to corrupt systemscans, if You keep compressed files (older ones, *.exe-ones, some *.rar-type-ones) in your directories.

Judging from the thread (s. a.) it is a common problem of somewhat not completely regular character (.i.e. the type of files actually producing the error/halt to the system scan is not yet completely identified / understood).

As for the moment, I have changed the mode NAV uses to scan files in order to omit compressed ones. ...
Ceterum Censeo: symantecs website is awful, its robots useless, its software - at least the last three versions - buggy/flawed still half year after first release ....
... and I shall hope for a patch, the first half year should soon be over!

Norton Systemworks 2005 ... endless story?

#5 Post by friedrich-eugen » Sun Apr 03, 2005 8:26 am

Hello all,

after sometime in peace since some days problems return. May be, it depends on symantec having introduced Version 8.03 of its Software (which is obviously not installed via lifeupdate)?

After booting - under Windows XP - while the user is being "opened", Norton - again - tells us, Windows and Norton are unable to cooperate, please uninstall and reinstall the software.

Anyone any hints? - Thanks in advance
