ThinkVantage System Update HOTKEY problem

#1 Post by killer » Tue Aug 19, 2008 4:56 am

I have a T43 (1871-FWG) running Windows XP Pro SP3.

ThinkVantage System Update told me that some updates were available for installation. The updates included Access Connections version 5 and Client Security version 8.2. These are dependent on the latest version of Hotkey Features Setup version 1.31.0610.

When I instruct System Update to download and install, everything seems to go well and then I am asked to restart my machine.

During the restart process I receive the following message:

C:\Progra~1\Lenovo\PkgMgr\HOTKEY\mrkgen16.exe
C:\Windows\System32\Config.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications.
Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

There are two options; Close or Ignore. Selecting either of these has no effect and it is necessary to reboot the machine to get Windows to load.

I have tried manually installing 7AVU43WW.exe via the Lenovo Support and Downloads web pages. It gave the same problem.

I should be grateful if someone could give me a way around this problem.

In between watching all the gold medals being won by Britain 8) I did a search for Hotkey and there are entries in the following:

C:\Drivers\Win
C:\Program Files\Lenovo\PkgMgr
C:\Program Files\Thinkpad\PkgMg
C:\Drivers\Win\Hotkey

Some of the names are:

HOTKEY
HOTKEY_1
HOTKEY_2
Hotkey_2.tpi
Hotkey_3.tpi
Hotkey_4.tpi
Hotkey.tpi

That appears to be a lot of directories and names. Perhaps the old IBM and the new Lenovo are getting muddled up?

OK, if you don't have any ideas please help me to uninstall the old versions of Hotkey. Any ideas would be useful. :(

i don't use System Update, so this is only conjecture... but does its interface allow for package uninstalls?

the reason i ask is that i'm still using the terminal release of the IBM/Lenovo Software Installer, which is no longer available for download. its interface allows uninstalls.

Unfortunately System Update does not allow uninstalls ... I searched through all the Help screens. :(

I looked in C:\IBMTOOLS\DRIVER and PKGMGR isn't there.

I ran a search on PKGMGR and it was found in:

C:\Program Files\Lenovo

well my guess then, is that system update removed software installer on you at some point.
