OS problem or Firefox 3 problem?

#1 Post by cshuy » Fri Aug 29, 2008 9:33 am

Last night, Firefox 3 would not open on my ThinkPad.

Prior to about 7pm last night, it would work just fine. it isn't even showing up in my processes.

I can't tell if this is a browser problem or an XP problem.

Help?

Any yellow or red flagged events showing up in the Application event log? If yes, what are the errors?

Uh.... How do I do that? And for which program? XP or Firefox3?

(Any answers on that will have to wait until I get home this evening. I'm currently at work...)

I'm not logged into XP at the moment, but it's something like right click on My Computer icon, select 'manage'. Click on event viewer or log ( think), then select the applications log/viewer.

Update:

Found out from my roommate that she was also having the same problem on a non-Thinkpad computer running Vista.

And that she had problems running her anti-virus, so she uninstalled, and re-installed the anti-virus and the problem went away.

I did the same thing and after a few glitches, it works fine again.

So I guess the answer to 'Firefox or XP?' is... neither.

Go figure.

This is probably unrelated to your issue, but this afternoon I was using Firefox 2 just reading a news story and I got the blue shut down screen saying that Windows experienced a problem and had to shut down so as not to damage my computer. Then it rebooted fine but then I got a warning that my AVG Free (vers 8 ) was out of date. I have it set to auto update each morning, so I opened it and clicked the update button and it did update and it said it was now up to date. About an hour later I was on my DH T23 using Firefox 3 to look up something for him and the same thing occured; I got the blue Windows shut down screen and his laptop rebooted. I checked his AVG (vers 7.5) and it also took an update and all systems were then up to date. I cannot figure out what caused these two shutdowns within one hour of each other, both while in Firefox.

Seeing you are still using XP SP2, perhaps you should apply XP SP3?
Also, AVG 7.5 is no longer supported since December 2007.
Can't be doing you/DH much good!

the paid version of 7.5 is supported until eoy. i believe it was extended because of all the kinks that needed to be worked out of v8.

Just FYI: I upgraded to AVGFree8 a few months ago, and I think there was a bug or something in one of the updates recently.

I also think that AVG fixed it after finding out about it and now everything is running okay again.

Where can I find SP3? I'm also still running SP2...

Windows Update site will have it. You'll need to use Internet Exploder to access it though.

well, I am running vers 8 and I had vers 8 on DH's machine but it seemed like it was always having problems doing an automatic update so I rolled it back to 7.5; but I guess I have to upgrade again. I am going to conclude that it must have been a problem with AVG updating that caused the reboot on both of our machines. I checked my Event Viewer and there was an AVG update session starting up at the time of this reboot.

Thanks for that, I already this morning uninstalled it on both of our machines and installed Avast 4.8
