Firefox 3.0 ... major issues resolved?

#1 Post by leoblob » Tue Sep 02, 2008 11:33 pm

I'm always slow to update to the next generation software. I have FF 2.0.0.16 and it works fine. Are there still any significant issues with FF 3, or does it seem to have whatever kinks and/or problems it may have had worked out OK?

My main concern was that I could not mark pages as unread, which is something I need to be able to do; the add-on had not been updated and the original author seemed to have disappeared. LinkVisitor 3.2 now works with Firefox 3, so I updated last week. All seems to be going OK, although I keep an eye on http://groups.google.co.uk/group/mozill ... rt.firefox as various aspects have changed -E.g bookmarks are no longer HTML files, but a change in 'about:config' saves them as an HTML file when you close down.

AVG's toolbar does not work yet, so I had to remove that.

Installation was straight forward, although I did export my saved passwords; did a screen dump of my add-ons and made a copy of my profile folder, just in case there were any problems, or I wanted to revert.

Other than the above, all seems to be fine. (Using Firefox 3.01)

I unfortunately was having problems with it, it seemed to take forever to load pages being the main complaint. I had it installed on one of our T23's, but went back to vers 2.0.0.16 on sunday and am happy again. It was unbelievable how much faster the older version loads. Perhaps vers 3 has more security features making the load slower??

I cannot say that I have really noticed any load time differences. After my first trial with 3.0, which I did not particularly like, and as I needed to mark pages as unread, I went back to 2.0.16. for several weeks. Gave it another go, this time with 3.0.1 and, as mentioned above, it seems to be OK. I recall seeing, probably on the forum-link I gave above, that you can install/use both versions. Perhaps that is worth a try.
