There are sporadic reports of people having issues alleged to be with SP3. I've installed it on three of mine without incident and intend to install it on the (borrowed) others when I can get my hands on them.

I have not see one single issue with SP3 in any of my computers since I installed it ... which I did 1 month after it was released.
Now: T60 2613-EKU | T23 2647-9NU | 600X 2645-9FU | HP 100LX
Past: X31 2673-Y13 | T41 2374-3HU | T22 2647-AEU

Have a good backup in place. A full disk backup, a clone ready to go. Better yet make the clone prior to the SP3 install. Make sure the clone works perfectly, then proceed.

I just got home from a client whose D^^L laptop failed after the SP3 install. Blue screens. Could not get to the desktop. The overseas support people perscribed a complete restore. Of course their backup was not as complete as it should have been and they are looking at spending the next week configuring.

Before this happened I had no problem on the bunch of SP3 installs I performed.

If you take the plunge please be prepared with good hot backups ready to go.

I'm just finishing a full XP re-install on two systems, a have SP3 on all the other computers in the house, and only ever had one weird incident that I'm chalking up to a randomly sporadic electrical anomaly.

All systems (a pleasant mix of manufacturers, desktops, and laptops) running rather well with SP3 and IE7. I just put IE8 on my HP notebook, and the jury is still out.

I have not seen a single reason yet why you would want to install it (a good reason for me would be that my employer endorses it for production - which they haven't done yet). So to answer the OP's question I would not recommend to install it unless you have a problem that SP3 is guaranteed/supposed to fix.

With all due respect, the OP was asking if there would be issues if the SP3 update was installed on a T60, not whether or not your employer instructed you to install it.

Many of us prefer to have our software at the latest revision, and have the most available security measures in place. Forum members not as knowledgable with software issues will wait for those who do to install and identify deficiencies or issues with the service pack or patch being offered.

SP3 being currently offered is OK in my book.

Had no problems with SP3 on any of my Thinkpads. Can be finicky with some desktop audio chips particularly if you have a VIA chipset.

Did a fresh install of XP on T60 couple weeks ago. Everything went well except when trying to defrag using bundled Diskeeper it come with a nasty error msg box :

MMC detected an error in a snap in. It is recommended that you shutdown and restart MMC.

It offer 3 choices 1. shutdown MMC and report to MS. 2. Continue this time only. 3. Contine and ignore this msg from now on.

I did some research and it seems to be safe to ignore and continue.

That's the only problem I've experienced so far.

After installing SP3, my wireless connectivity was damaged. I was able to repair it with a series of driver updates, but never could get WPA encryption to work again.

I ultimately reverted to a pre-SP3 backup and will not be installing SP3 unless a bugfix is made available.

FWIW, I installed SP3 about 1 month after it was released on three Thinkpads and two HP laptops. More recently I installed SP3 on my new T61, which came from the factory with XP SP2. We have had zero problems or issues that I can attribute to SP3. We don't have security problems either (yet, thank goodness).
600e (needs a replacement HD)
T20 (2647-44U, needs a win98 install disk to rebuild vmm32.vxd)
T23 (2647-HNU, pulsing fan, won't boot)
T41p (2373-GEU, works perfectly)
T61 (7658-CTO, works perfectly)

I have an R40 that i installed SP3 on last night. Now the aironet client utility keeps turning the radio off, so I am removing the service pack and will see if this solves the problem.
I also noticed that the mouse does not respond when I first move it for several seconds then moves until I stop then it hesitates again each time I try to move it. This after installing SP3.
Well, Ihave just uninstalled sp3 and there is no more mouse hesitation and the wireless radio is on and it connected to the internet automatically as it should. thank goodness.
