vista 64bit on T61??

#1 Post by Maden » Mon Sep 08, 2008 9:37 am

Hi all,

I've got a T61 (T7300, 2GB, 140NVS, 120GB HD) model: 7662
I am currently running vista 32bit, however I've been thinking about getting some more RAM (4GB)
Is it possible to run vista 64bit on my notebook? And what is it depending on?

Is there a noticeable performance increase from 2GB to 4GB RAM?
Thanks,
Maden

Check the specifications at the Lenovo support site to see for your model. My T61p came with Vista Business 64-bit and runs. It has 3Gb of ram, and I don't see ram as a problem. ... JDH

The Core 2 processor is 64-bit capable, so yes, you're in the clear on that one. Also, an initial review of Windows Vista said that performance increases were noticed up to 3 GB. Now, when you put this extra RAM in, Vista will say that it's using more memory, but it's not hogging your resources. It's just cached data that can be retrieved later at a much faster speed.

Yes, it will run fine.... I have it running on a T61 here.

2GB is OK, 4GB is better!

I used a Microsoft retail Vista installation DVD, and retail key.

is there a real performance increase? from vista 32bit & 2Gb to 64bit and 4GB?
Is it useful for my purposes (MS Office, Photoshop, Counterstrike 1.6 :D, little bit gaming) to make the change?
thx,
Maden

The extra RAM's going to help you out quite a bit. The 64-bit capability won't give you much unless you have a 64-bit operating system AND 64-bit software to run under it. If you're software is 64-bit and number-intensive, then you will see a performance increase. For example, I got a 33% speed increase when switching from the 32-bit LAME MP3 Encoder to the 64-bit one.

Running 64-bit here with 4GB ram and love it. Haven't had any problems, and more and more 64-bit applications are being released.
