Firefox 3.0.1: Accidentally Adding Bookmark Problem
Firefox 3.0.1: Accidentally Adding Bookmark Problem
Hi,
This problem is driving me absolutely nuts. It's happening with Firefox 3.0.1 on my ThinkPad as well as my wife's. I can't find anything about it anywhere Firefox-related, which leads me to believe that it might have to do with the way that Firefox interacts with ThinkPads in particular.
Here's the problem: In Firefox, when I try to open the "Bookmarks" menu on the top of the screen to select a Bookmark, many times it has the effect of bookmarking the current page -- the menu doesn't open, and instead the "Page Bookmarked" dialog comes up.
This doesn't happen every time I try to open the menu. Maybe 40% of the time. I can't for the life of me figure out why it does it certain times but not others.
Anyone else having this problem? It's infuriating!
Thanks!
David

You've got the wrong end of the stick there, but I don't blame you.
It's not a statement of what has happened, but of what you are about to do. If you cancel it, it shouldn't save the bookmark.
When you come across a page that has already been bookmarked, it will look different, and instead show "Edit this bookmark"

Ah, soooory. You mean that when you just want to access a bookmark, it's happening.
Then I'm not sure. I fixed on the annoyance of the way it was phrased. It may be due to an extension, though. They seem to be the cause of most FF troubles.

Yeah, I thought that was pretty clear from my original post (viz., "...when I try to open the 'Bookmarks' menu on the top of the screen to select a Bookmark...").Radioguy wrote:Ah, soooory. You mean that when you just want to access a bookmark, it's happening.![]()
No extensions installed. Just out of curiosity, exactly what was objectionable about the way I phrased the problem? Then I'm not sure. I fixed on the annoyance of the way it was phrased. It may be due to an extension, though. They seem to be the cause of most FF troubles.
None at all. Now I think we're both getting the wrong end of the stick here.
I meant the annoyance of the way FF now states it as "Page bookmarked" in the past tense, even though you haven't committed to adding it yet. When I first upgraded it, I thought it was telling me that all the pages I was trying to bookmark were already there. When you posted, I thought this was what you were referring to. Obviously you have a more serious problem, especially since it's not to do with an extension.
Worse-case scenario: You start FF in safe mode, and backup your bookmarks. Then uninstall, and reinstall it.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Hi All,
Here's a thought, when you click on the 'bookmarks' menu at the top of the page, the bookmarks 'column' opens up, and you will notice that the 'bookmark page' request line is exactly where your mouse pointer already is from your last action (i.e. selecting the bookmarks menu). So, if you are not very careful or have held the mouse button down, or inadvertantly sort of double clicked, you would have selected the 'bookmark page' without knowing or meaning to.
I haven't explained this very well, but I hope you understand what I mean.
Of course, all this could be of no help in which case I'm sorry for wasting your time.
Speak to you soon.
