Increasing case of BSOD on x61 Vista SP1

#1 Post by nikemen » Sun Sep 28, 2008 9:03 pm

Is there any way to figure out what is causing this? I have tried checking the memory dump, that doesn't show anything. but, sometimes when I put the device to sleep, it is on pause when I get back since it BSOD'd while I was away.

If it happens while you are using sleep, have you tried changing the RAM out? If you have two sticks, try using only one, and does it happen.(Try with each stick)

happened again

#3 Post by nikemen » Fri Oct 03, 2008 4:50 pm

Well, it happened again today. I noticed it WHILE it was doing it.

It rebooted, and then showed the INSTALLING UPDATES screen as if some windows update settings were being installed.

What is THAT? I checked in WU, but nothing showed updated today, or for the past four days.

Just a few thoughts:
1. Do you use reg cleaners or any reg "tweaks"?
2. Do you use SU (maybe some Vista update from Lenovo that cannot install properly or isn´t meant for your machine anyway)?
3. Have you scanned for trojans or another malware?

Such BSODs can be also caused by pirated video converters ;)

nope

#5 Post by nikemen » Wed Oct 08, 2008 6:06 pm

don't use any reg cleaners, I THOUGHT I had found the problem a funambol load that seemed to have left a trace, and was showing as active at the same time as a crash.

But, after working to remove it all, I got ANOTHER crash today.

there is a CRASH report that comes up when I reboot, but I cannot access any of the files. I am ADMIN ,but when I GO to the files in USER\BLAH BLAH etc, I can SEE the xml file, but cannot open or access it.

Is there ANY way to see what was going on WHEN it happens so I can troubleshoot. MSFT reporting doesn't seem to do shiotot

Re: Can't open file: I haven't actually tried this in Vista, but in XP to fix this you have to access the Security tab when you right-click on a file or folder. If you have Simple File Sharing turned off, you can do this as administrator. Otherwise you have to boot up in SAFE MODE to see and have access to this tab. If there is no owner, then you have to add an owner first, close the tab, then reopen and add permissions for the users.

problem

the problem is, that those files dissappear after a full boot is finished.

In most cases there are only two reasons why a file cannot be opened by an admin. GomJabbar mentioned the one. The other one is when the files in question are still in use by another program. However, you should be still able to copy these files, right?
If this doesn´t work either, you may want to check out what eventviewer has to say. Without providing some more information it won´t be very easy for us to help you out ;) To start with some:
1. What Antivirus/Anit-Malware/Firewall programs are you running?
2. Which Lenovo programs do you use?
3. Are any other programs running in background (like windowblinds or some kind of desktop manager)?
Also, you may want to download process explorer from sysinternals and link a screenshot. This could make things a bit simpler ;)

Cheers

@ GomJabbar: If you have admin privileges in Vista, then that security tab is available to you. There is no Simple File Sharing in Vista as far as I know.

My guess for the BSODs is an update that was not install correctly. Try doing a System Restore before the last Windows Update Cycle and see if that helps. The fact that you have an installing updates screen tells me that it was in progress in installing updates when something interrupted it and corrupted a critical file causing the system to become unstable. Hopefully booting into safe mode will work and system restore can do its job.

I have been getting BSOD on my X61T with Vista32 SP1 ever since I have put SP1 on. I am running with an additional 2GB of ram to the original 1GB I got with the machine...I believe that could be the problem.
I have mentioned this problem in a couple of other threads, but have come up with no definitive solution, I am stick with constant crashes, etc, and now recently as well, Windows Update does not want to let me click 'yes' as no administrative rights boxes pop up to download updates.
I have decided to hold out until Christmas when this school term is over, and re-load my pre-SP1 backup from my external HDD.

@ Trekk69: If you installed the ram after installing SP1, then I would say the ram is your problem. It may have compatibility issues with your system or it's just not getting along with your current stick of ram. This does happen and is often the case for BSODs. Now if you had the ram installed before SP1 and it was installed in your system for sometime before the SP1 install, then something in the SP1 install got messed up a corrupted a file in the Windows directory. Back up your data first and then try to see if you can do a system restore to a point before you installed SP1. You will lose any programs that you installed after SP1 but your data should remain untouched, but since you should have backed up your data this shouldn't be a problem.

I had the ram installed before SP1 installation.
I would like to restore to a point before my SP1 installation now (I do not have access to the pre-SP1 backup on my external HDD until Christmas), but like a dummy, I used the "vsp1cln" tool to remove the uninstallation files....so I do not know of any other way to restore, now, before Christmas.

If you are getting BSODs under any version of NT, the aproach to solving them is the same as it always has been. Change the brain-dead default OS settings so your computer does not automatically reboot. Let it sit there "forever" with the BOSD message, so you can copy down the first lines that typically say something like "STOP IRQ_NOT_EQUAL...0x0000008f"

Now take that error code, exactly, and google it. Or better yet, go to the MS web sites, go to the MSKB, and see if there's any information there about the error code. Often it points to a specific subsystem or driver and that's enough to point you at the culprit.

A BSOD can be from bad hardware or software, often bad drivers including some that are certified for Vista. But the error code (which is also present in the dump files if you want to look them up) usually points you toward the culprit.
