Trojan in Vista Preload?

#1 Post by rscosworth » Mon Sep 29, 2008 5:46 am

Guys,

Just received a second hand 7650 (R61i)

I created the recovery DVD's from vista option and then proceeded to replace the hdd and reload the Vista Home Premium 32bit using the cd's provided.

I used the custom install option and removed most of the Lenovo bloatware.

On completetion of the reload, i installed Vista SP1, i rebooted and almost immediatly windows firewall started detecting Trojans on the system.

Obviously i can disable the firewall/windows defender but thats not the point.

Has anyone else come accross this and is there a fix? Could it be that the recovery CD's that it made have the trojan in them?

Im confused - help.....

If the recovery CD's were genuine Lenovo or IBM, then it seems unlikely they would be infected with something. At least I have not seen that happen. ... JDH

Probably you have received a ThinkPad with an already infected Vista setup (in case you haven´t reinstall Vista after receiving the laptop yourself). Or this is just another example for nice Vista bug :) I would suggest you to reinstall Vista from scratch (using clean Vista DVD) if you have time to. You can then add whatever Lenovo software needed by downloading it from their site and also create recovery CDs or DVDs for your Vista setup.

Good luck and post back

Not to jack your thread, but does anyone know where we can get genuine Vista CDs? I wiped mine to put XP on it, but I'd like to go back and put Vista back on it so I can sell mine...

As posted elsewhere: Call Lenono and beg. They'll probably cost you $45.
There is an MS licensing policy that imposes the same terms on all the OEMs: NO VISTA MEDIA, you must make it yourself. This is supposed to stop bootlegging.

The alternative is to get a set of replacement Vista media (no license, no codes) from MS's Fullfillment Department for about $15, but you'll also need to download key drivers (like the SATA hard drive) from the Lenono site and install those. Might not be so easy for some folks. If you can borrow any Vista retail disc, all versions are supposed to be on all discs, and your product code should work to install the correct version.

When you're done...call 1-800-RU-LEGIT and tell MS just how impressed you are by their new policies. I suspect they'll just PO enough customers to actually increase bootlegging instead of reducing it.
