System update gathering user information error

I thought I was alone with this error but it seems extremely widespread. Does anyone here know of a workaround or the underlying cause to this problem? It really pisses me off that Lenovo is doing nothing about this either.

I do not use System Update, and I have not read through the thread you posted above (don't plan to either - on either account).

However, see if the following applies to you.

Symptom

When running ThinkVantage System Update, an error message appears showing the following: "An error occurred while gathering user information."

Affected configurations

ThinkPad systems running Windows XP with Service Pack 3 may be affected by this symptom.

Solution

Older versions of ThinkVantage System Update have compatibility issues with Windows XP Service Pack 3. Upgrade ThinkVantage System Update to a version newer than 3.10.0007 (systemupdate310-2007-10-24.exe). Download the newest version here:

No I am running server 2008 standard. I have the most up to date version and re downloaded, uninstalled, and reinstalled over a dozen times. I have even reinstalled windows twice. It worked the first time I had server 08 installed, but then when I did a routine reformat it hasn't worked since.
