Help getting a network printer working with a T42p

#1 Post by egibbs » Thu Jan 06, 2005 3:24 pm

On my home network I have an HP PSC2610 print/scan/fax/pictbridge/coffe maker thing which is hooked directly to the network (ethernet). I installed the driver for it on both my T20 (retail XP Pro) and my Netvista (OEM XP Pro) with no issues - the driver has native network support, it went out and found the printer during installation, works great.

I just got a T42P (2373HVU) and am trying to install the driver - it can't find the printer. The T20 sitting right next to it on the same network switch sees it fine, the T42 fails to find it.

I can ping the printer by IP address on the T42 and get a response, but the driver installation program refuses to find it in the normal search. If I have the driver search by IP address it also fails, but if I have it search for the MAC address of the network card in the printer it finds it, but can't identify what it is and won't install it.

I've tried disabling the XP firewall, running network setup wizard, etc. Everything else on the network shows up fine (other computers, Network Attached Storage, etc.). I'm using Access Connections and have set up a location with only the ethernet adapter in it to make sure it is not trying to use the wireless adapter, but still no joy. I've been through the IBM, HP, and Microsoft knowledge bases with no success.

I'm sure there is some simple thing I'm missing - but I can't for the life of me figure out what it might be. Any one care to tell me?

Thanks,

Ed Gibbs

I have a HP 4050N, and if I wanna install the printer, I have to use the software provided by HP. I just can not install the printer just by using those in Windows. Maybe you should check if you have the software or you have to download it from HP's website.

Never mind - I found it. Somehow I had gotten Internet Cconncetion Sharing turned on, which was causing the machine to use the wrong IP range for the network.

I was using the HP software - all 500+ MB of it. Once I turned ICS off it worked fine.

Thanks,
