BTTray: 2 instances after autostart

#1 Post by BigCatAndy » Fri Oct 10, 2008 7:35 am

Hello everyone,

I have one issue with BTTray application (an icon of Bluetooth, appearing in the system tray): I have it in my autostart folder, but somehow I always get two instances running. I have to go to the Task Manager and kill one of two instances from there.

I ran Autoruns utility, and it shows me, that BTTray is loaded twice. When I unselect one of those two, both become unselected (and nothing is loaded).

It is not life-critical, but I would like to know why this happens.

Regards,
Andrey.

I, too, am wondering about this BTTray.exe. It tries to load at startup, and my Trend virus program blocks it. I haven't been allowing it, bc the Bluetooth on my R61 is currently working the way I want it to. Something killed the IBM Bluetooth on my 3000N100 after I reloaded the operating system, and now only the Microsoft icon, which doesn't support headsets :x is there. I'm afraid that the same thing might happen if I allow this BTTray process to load at startup. Should I allow it?

I'm not an expert, but it would say, that you need to re-install Widcomm drivers for the Bluetooth. Perhaps, the message of GomJabbar from other thread (http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 965#458965) can be useful for you.

What do you mean with "reloaded the operating system"? Reinstalled? rebooted PC?

Cheers,
Andrey

Hey Andrey,

The change happened after I reloaded the entire Windows operating system from the discs. After that, the BT icon in my system tray became the smaller light blue Microsoft Bluetooth icon instead of the bigger, dark blue BT icon. The application would discover and even pair with my headsets, but the headsets would not function. (They did before the reload.) Here is an article I read about the problem in a Skype forum:

On this link, you can see the different BT Icons. My 3000N100 is stuck with the smaller, light blue icon, which is completely useless to me, bc (I think) as the article says, that application does not support headsets. I agree with you, I think the answer lies somewhere in this forum (in the link you sent me and maybe some others). I can probably combine that and this Skype info and eventually get the Bluetooth on the 3000N100 to work again. I just have to take the time to learn and figure out what I'm doing. I'm not so good with this stuff, even the basics, like finding, installing, and/or updating drivers and other such tasks. Thank you for the link and the reply.

Tony
you are welcome! :-) Hope, that my information could help you...

Actually, it is well known that BT stack of Microsoft is rather poor in the sense of functionality. That's why my vendors install the BT stack of Widcomm. It's much richer and more comfortable to use.

Andrey

But I am still wondering, should I allow BTTray.exe to run, load, or do whatever it is that it wants to do ... or should I just let Trend Micro continue to block it on every startup?

I would allow BTTray. Actually, it is nothing then a set of shortcuts to your BT functions. The general security of BT connections can be set via "Active Connections" application, or at the level of Windows settings.

Thanks, Andey. I would like to allow it, so that I can have additional shortcuts, but I don't want to allow it if it has anything to do with the Microsoft Bluetooth stack -- I don't want that to somehow take over and replace the factory Bluetooth applications which work for me. Will allowing BTTray.exe somehow invoke the Microsoft Bluetooth?
