Windows Media crashes W2K when open a video/audio file

#1 Post by alfredo_macias » Sat Jan 08, 2005 3:59 am

Hi,

I have a IBM 560E with windows 2000 pro NT sp 4 in spanish. Windows media crashes W2K when open a video/audio file. I have updated Windows Media to last version, but the error is not solved.

Many thanks in advance.

Best Regards, Alfredo.

Blake, thanks for your reply

These are the feautes of my thinkpad: 7G HD, 2M video, 90M RAM. Booting W2K in save mode Windows Media Player (and RealPlayer) are able to play the video (.mpg format) but without audio because multimedia drivers are not loaded in this mode.

WMP and RealPlayer are able to play a audio clip without any problemas but W2K crashes when try to play a video clip (it shows the tipical blue screen with kernel trap 0x00000007)

I have formated the partition to have W2K clean of sw of 3rd suppliers but the result is the same.

Any ideas?

Cheers, Alfredo.

what version of media player do you have, are all your updates installed?

sounds basic but it could be an issue. also if its a large file thesystem could just hang

Hi Blake,

Thanks for your reply. In fact I have installed service pack4 and all the critical updates from Windows Update page.

I have also updated Windows Media player to last version and the file size is not high (5M - it is just only a video-clip in .mpg format)

The strange thing is Windows Media player is able to play a sound-clip. The sound-card is and ESS1668 included in the motherboard. W2K detected the card in the setup and installed a driver from CAB. ESS manufacturer does not have a new version of this driver for W2K (i was thinking in a possible issue with the driver - it is from 1999)

Maybe the issue is related with the video driver because in save mode, Windows Media player is able to play the video but in small screen (save mode load VGA 640x480 instead of VGA 800x600)

Very appreciated your replies.

Cheers, Alfredo.
