unable to reinstall Win 2000

#1 Post by syrenab » Sat Oct 25, 2008 10:02 am

Perhaps there is a knowledgeable person who can help me.
I am trying to upgrade to a better (but old) desktop for backup purposes. the following are my problems.

1. I reformatted the hard drive which originally contained Win98-SE. I try to install from an original Win 2000 Pro SP3 CD. Setup fails with following message:
Setup failed - I386\NT5INF.CAT could not be found
Signature for Windows 2000 Pro set-up is invalid.
I checked the CD, I386\NT5INF.CA_ exists

2. I transferred the hard-drive (on which the original Win 2000 had been installed) from old to newer cabinet.
Upon start up, the drive is recognized, Then I get
"Searching for Boot Record from CDROM...Not Found (correct - no CD in drive)
Searching for Boor Record from IDE-0... OK

Then it stops and will not proceed any further.

Any suggestions about what to do?
Note the hard-drive that had Win 98 is much larger in memory. The newer cabinet has more RAM, newer and larger Power Supply, overall cleaner. That is why I wanted to move to newer version.

From a gray past:
You have to make a set of 4 boot-floppies first.

Could the jumper settings be incorrect on the Hard drive??? I'm a little confused on what is going on. It sounds like you have transplanted a larger hard drive into a new case. When you tried to install Win 2000, the install gave you that error message. If that is the case, it sounds like the CD-ROM drive is having trouble reading data off the CD. I would suggest cleaning the lens (if possible) or replacing the driver with another one if you have on laying around and see if that works.

You second problem sounds like you put the old drive back in the machine that had Win 2000 already installed and now will not boot. Once again, check the jumpers and cables and see what happens. If that does not fix it, the computer cannot read the boot sector to load the boot loader to start Windows. You can use a set of boot floppies to get into the Windows 2000 setup and see if you can fix the MBR. If you could give me little more information I might be able to help further.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.
