"Taking Ownership" of hidden files

#1 Post by MeCasa » Wed Dec 03, 2008 12:06 pm

I need help deleting a backup file as I want to delete the current backup and replace it with a tweaked version. Here's a thread that I found that deals with the problem but I don't know how to "take ownership"

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=55088

I'm also looking at buying Acronis's True Image for backup duties as it's easier to control where the image file resides while ThinkVantage (Lenovo's backup software) requires you to add the new backup to C drive before you migrate outside C, the real problem is that you cannot easily delete or 'replace' an old backup, the software wants to 'add' a backup and backups pile up using an inordinate amount of hard drive bordering on ridiculous. I use Acronis's Disk Management and it's a good investment and I would hope True Image is also first class. But first I need to delete the current backup.

Or am I possibly missing something?

Thanks

On the "take ownership" topic, here is a link for a registry hack that seems to work:

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows- ... -in-vista/

If you are trying to delete a Rescue & Recovery backup, it can only be done from the R&R program, not out of explorer.

About Acronis: Top rate! I use it constantly and it is very solid and easy to use. It isn't all that friendly to use for just backing up your personal data, but for backing up the Windows system, it's bar none.

For backing up your documents, use Vista's built in "RoboCopy". It is fast and reliable.

RoboCopy requires creation of simple batch files; if that's not familiar, download the freeware version of SyncBack, which has an easy to use GUI to do pretty much the same thing as RoboCopy.

Thank you for your reply. You can indeed use M$ Explorer to delete the R&R Backups. Here's a good link on ownership on XP Pro (sorry I didn't mention that)

http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/inde ... topic=4581

Disable common file sharing
Enable show common file types
Enable show hidden files
Boot in Safe Mode (the account that I use was the only account that showed the R&R since the backup was done in that account and luckily this account had full Admin Rights)

Boot in Safe Mode
Take Ownership
And DELETE !!!!!
