winxpsp3 showing dvd drive as usb device?

#1 Post by joncnca » Fri Dec 12, 2008 3:26 am

hi,

i just did a clean install of winxp sp3 onto my t400, and after installing all the different drivers to the different devices, i noticed that the little tray icon for a usb device was always there.

so i checked it, and apparently it's identifying my dvd drive as a usb device. if i stop the device, the dvd drive is no longer usable and disappears from 'my computer'

anyone seen this before? is there a way to fix it? i can't come up with a search string that gives me any results.

thanks

What tray icon for a USB device? Are you talking about the 'safely remove hardware' icon? That is normal.

hi harryc,

yes, it's the 'safely remove hardware' icon.

i believe it's normal if i have a usb device plugged in, but there's nothing plugged into my usb devices. it recognizes my dvd drive as a usb device.

this is my first thinkpad, so if it's normal for the dvd drive to be recognized as a usb device (does the optical drive use a usb interface?), then all right. just haven't seen this before with other laptops.

The 'safely remove device' icon recognizes any optical drive installed in an internal bay, so yes it is normal. It is an IDE interface, not USB. USB devices plugged into any USB port are likewise recognized by the icon. Out of curiosity, what exactly does it say under 'hardware devices' for your optical drive when you open the icon?

fyi, the 'safely remove device' icon will also show PCMCIA cards, and whatever is connected to the firewire (IEEE 1394) port.
Plus when you are connected to an Advanced Dock and have an ultrabay HD or DVD drive installed in that dock, it DOES show that one as a USB device .

oh ok, i thought that only usb devices were identified by the 'safely remove hardware' icon, the ide optical drives in my other laptops have never caused the 'safely remove hardware' icon to show up.

under hardware devices, it says:

HL-DT-ST RW/DVD MU10N - (E:)
