32bit to 64bit

#1 Post by mattbiernat » Mon Dec 15, 2008 7:03 pm

Is there anyway (legally) to upgrade from 32 bit Vista to 64bit Vista?

If you tried the upgrade tool in Vista in My Computer -> Properties, and it did not offer you the upgrade, then you probably have to buy an upgrade license. Is your machine a 64-bit machine?

I have to say, now that I have been running Vista 64-bit and have it running smoothly, I think 64-bit is the way to go. Clearly faster.

no, but i am getting x61t with 32 Vista and might want to upgrade to 64 bit once ram becomes a bit cheaper. do you think within the next half a year we are going to see Windows 7 or will i have to buy new 64 bit Vista OS.

My view on 64-bit is that it has arrived. Anything less now is legacy, and looking forward means 64-bit. So having said that, my T61p needed all new software (Office, Adobe, CommView, UltraEdit, WS_FTP, SmartWhois, on and on and on). Having done that, and having gone to Vista 64-bit will be good experience for me when Windows 7 comes along. So I would make the plunge if I were you. ... JDH

If you can find an Anytime Upgrade disc that may be an option. They were easier to find when Vista was released, but now cost more money.

You should be able to use the same license code on a 64 bit version - the key works per edition of Vista, not per platform. My copy of vista was initially a 32bit OEM Ultimate, but 64 bit Ultimate is happily installed.

I think 64 bit Vista is good - subject to driver support and at least 3GB RAM.. Unfortunately it's impossible to install 64 bit over the top of 32 bit though - you must reinstall.

There is the vague possibility that if this is Vista supplied by Lenovo for use on the Thinkpads, it may be a special OEM release tied to the hardware. There's only one way to find out. Borrow a copy of Vista off a friend or 'obtain' an uncracked copy off bitttorrent and try out your license code.

i ordered x300 and it just says Windows Vista Business. there was no option to select 64 bit version.
if i won't be able to upgrade it, I will just wait until i get more money or until Windows 7 will be released. by that time 4gb sticks should be much cheaper too.

If it is not too late to change, I would insist on Vista 64-bit. Very candidly, I see no point at all in Vista 32-bit. Better in the latter case to stick with XP. Vista 64-bit will need new software, but will better prepare you for Windows 7. If I understand correctly, the new software I do have (mostly 64-bit compliant) will run happily in Windows 7. ... JDH

I think you will find the extra 3 day wait to be worthwhile. There will be some pain (there was for me), but now Vista 64-bit is my daily driver, and by that I mean that I yield to nothing. Everything now works the way I work and need to work. ... JDH
