A blue screen

#1 Post by IBM USER » Tue Jan 20, 2009 3:44 pm

Hi every body

Mine is IBM ThinkPad T42. Actually i had a program called "ZENworks Desktop Management Agent", which was related to my university's server. However, since i graduated, i stupidly deleted it thinking that it won't affect my PC. Now, the problem i am having is that when the computer starts up it gives me a blue screen  .. I tried to enter from the safe mode but i says i typed the wrong password.. i also tried to go to the last known good configuration, but still the same "blue screen" appears.

Is there any solution :?: or just give up and format
i would be thankful for u all :D

If you have an XP install CD, you could let it repair your windows install. All windows updates you have made since will be gone and probably some programs will be broken, but at least you will have access to your data without the need of a second HD or PC and also you could then reinstall all broken programs (I hope).

Good luck

Did you delete it by using Window's Add/Remove Software applet or by deleting the folders?

I thought ZENworks sounded familiar, and looked it up. it's one of those old danged Novell things. You might want to check if your network adapter still has Novell protocols attached to it and remove them if you don't use them. Most wireless connections only need TCP/IP bound to them these days, depending on circumstances.

And to correct myself, Novell says you should have run the uninstall utility unc32.exe from the server or the CD to remove ZENWorks.

The program was installed by the university and i used to start up by Novell's applications, and i thought that if i deleted it then i will enter by the regular Windows start up. :(

Thanks a lot.. I appreciate your help

Last good configuration will do nothing because it only rollbacks drivers, not software. Is there an Administrator password? If not boot into safe mode and get to the classic login window (if you use the welcome screen, press ctl+alt+del twice). Type Administrator as the user and leave the password blank. Now you should be able to access the computer and fix everything.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

Stargate199's post reminds me that you should be able to use System Restore to fix this. I recommend using System Restore from SAFE MODE, but it can work from in Normal Mode.

To use System Restore from SAFE MODE, press F8 at the beginning of the boot sequence to get the Windows boot menu. Choose SAFE MODE without networking, and once booted up go to Start > Help and Support, and under Tasks, choose Restore your computer (something like that). You should be able to choose a Restore Point from before you broke your system.

I reread your initial post, and you say that SAFE MODE did not accept your password. You need to enter the Administrator's password for Windows XP. If you forgot the Administrator's password (or if it was never set, you can try leaving the password field blank), then I am afraid Windows will have to be reinstalled. Be sure and check whether your Caps Lock key is turned on or not. This can foil a password, as the password is case sensitive.
