Wireless Zero Configuration doesn't start automatically
Wireless Zero Configuration doesn't start automatically
When I turn on my computer sometimes I have to go into services and manually start the Wireless Zero Configuration service and other times it has automatically started like it's supposed to. This is not really a big deal just inconvenient. How can I fix this? I want it to come on automatically and I have it set in services to automatic. I checked the System event log to see if there are error events for the service and it says The Wireless Zero Configuration service was successfully sent a stop control. That just tells me that something sometimes stops the Wireless Configuration service. This started maybe a week or two after I used System Restore to restore my computer to an earlier time and I also tried to remove the Linksys Router Software. I ended up having to reinstall the Linksys Router Software because my wireless internet won't work without it. However the Linksys Router Software doesn't even work and to even use my wireless I have to have the software set to NOT run automatically when I start up my computer. Also I removed Access Connections a long time before this problem started. I want to know how to get Wireless Zero Configuration to start automatically like it's supposed to. And is there a solution as to eithier get the Linksys software to work or to be able to remove it without problems?

Re: Wireless Zero Configuration
I would think the Linksys software you say must run to get the device to work might not only be supplying drivers, but is taking over the configuration of the connection.
Sounds strange though, when you say you need Linksys wireless router software for your laptop to connect to the Internet; here I can configure the Linksys router with no special software by connecting to its web page. I only need software for the built-in wireless network adapter of my laptop, or the external D-Link USB adapter. More info on your Windows version, wireless card and ThinkPad model might be useful.
In the meantime, can you go into the Network Connections icon of Control Panel, select your connection, right click and go to Properties, go to the Wireless Networks tab, and make sure there is a check in the "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings" box.

Re: Wireless Zero Configuration
To be more specific I have to have the Linskys Router Software installed to be able to use my wireless at the house. I have Windows XP Professional and an 11b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Express Adapter II.
There is a check in that box. But sometimes when I shut my computer off my computer seems to forget.Mike Blake wrote: In the meantime, can you go into the Network Connections icon of Control Panel, select your connection, right click and go to Properties, go to the Wireless Networks tab, and make sure there is a check in the "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings" box.

Re: Wireless Zero Configuration doesn't start automatically
Check msconfig to see if it is disabled there. Msconfig is responsible for all startup items, so make sure Wireless Config is enabled there. If you still have the problem, open up services, right click on the Wireless config service and click the dependencies tab and see if some other service is not starting up on boot that is required for wireless config to start.

It is enabled under msconfig. I have looked under the dependencies tab and the stuff under dependencies I have no idea how to get those two items to start if thats the problem. They aren't listed under services.
Re: Wireless Zero Configuration doesn't start automatically
All I show WZC being dependent on are Remote Procedure Call (RPC) and NDIS User I/O Protocol. If your machine is showing additional dependencies, please list what they are.It is enabled under msconfig. If not, it appears some viruses, including Win32 Bagle, may disable NDIS User Protocol. See this for a solution:

From my experience you need to remove any (Linksys) router software from your laptop.
Then Windows can take over for wifi connections.

Re: Wireless Zero Configuration doesn't start automatically
That's what got me puzzled; routers are usually standalone devices. Never previously heard of one requiring a PC be connected to it wirelessly and running certain software in order to function.RealBlackStuff wrote:From my experience you need to remove any (Linksys) router software from your laptop.

Re: Wireless Zero Configuration doesn't start automatically
There are a lot of ISPs who send out kit, including routers, together with an installation CD. Those who use the CD get a load of software installed on their computer, a lot of which is rubbish. You are right, Mike, that they should be stand-alone devices. It doesn't always work out like that though.Mike Blake wrote:That's what got me puzzled; routers are usually standalone devices. Re: Wireless Zero Configuration doesn't start automatically
My machine is not showing additional dependencies just those two mentioned. And I guess I could try to uninstall the Linskys software again.

I tried the link I would like to try to find a solution that doesn't require me to go into the registry though.
