Cannot delete folder in Windows XP -- driving me nuts!

#1 Post by mgp » Thu Jan 20, 2005 4:25 am

I recently downloaded a file attachment to a folder in My Documents...this file turned out to be nonfunctional, and I deleted it...only later to realize that the folder it had been stored in now cannot be deleted, and I keep getting the following warning when attempting to delete:

"Cannot delete CA3AMHRZ.: cannot find the specified file"

("CA3AMHRZ." being the "file" I had deleted before)

Any advice/helpful input on this would be MUCH appreciated.

try it with the cmd shell or boot with a knoppix cd.

Another approach is to sign on as a different user (say Administrator), make sure your Windows Explorer preferences are set to view all files and extensions, then try to delete the folder. ... JD Hurst

...or simply boot into safe mode (hit F8) and go find/delete the file...

Edit - so why do I get a COOL smiley when I want to write F eight? !

Thanx Michael - I realised when I looked back - spent my day squinting at code (Visual Basic) today so when I got home I found the error fairly fast!

Hey all, thanks for the advice, but I still cannot delete the folder. Any further suggestions?

CHeck the properties of the folder, a sto ownership and such. You can also try from a cmd shell, doing a dir /x will show you the name of the file/folder if it was using a special character etc. Then you can issue a rmdir <folder name>

Otherwise it could be some special hiden folder placed by spyware/malware, at which point you might have to try some other tricks from Microsoft's website.

the folder was a folder i created to store downloaded files/attachments...the CA3AMHRZ was a file (which can be seen when I select to view all hidden files AND operating system files oddly enought) in this folder, and its 0kb.

You might try putting the same file back into the folder you created, whether
restored from the recycle bin or downloaded again from the same source,
before restarting in safe mode to delete the folder with the file still in it.
