MS Windows Update offered me new drivers last night

#1 Post by RBob » Fri Jan 21, 2005 12:26 pm

I have an R51 running XP Pro SP2. I ran Windows Update last night and for the first time ever, it offered me "new" drivers, one for the video (ATI Radeon 7500), one for the modem, and one for something I didn't recognize.

I didn't take any of them, but wonder where they came from; for example, is the video driver from ATI or IBM?

Are they likely to be older, newer or the same as the drivers on IBM's Web site?

Windows Update and Specific hardware driver update

Hello RBob,

I usually only accept MS-software-related updates.

I did once accept an Intel-mini-pci-network-card-related update and it did no harm.

But I would not accept any more system-related updates, as I think that IBM probablely does have introduced modifications. Graphics-drivers to me are to near to the core system to experiment.

Last but not least of course, I would look at the time that has passed since the last update and at my experience with the system as it is.

I trust any and all Windows Critical & Security Updates without regrets...so far, and I suspect I always will. For Drivers, I find it's best to use the manufacturers although I have used Windows suggested without problems in the past.
