I don't think anything is wrong with it. The more activity during boot the longer it takes, it's perfectly normal.

Thanks for the info. But is it ok for my thinkpad to have a boot time of about 2 minutes? I have an R51 1.5Ghz, 512 MB RAM, WinXP Home, 14.1" TFT

You've probably got a few unnecessary services running at boot-up. Try running MSCONFIG and you can weed out a few of the useless things that start at boot. Also a spyware-scan in case some nasties have got in behind your firewall/anti-virus - they can slow things up too.

(To avoid polluting the forum with unnecessary details, try Googling for details about MSCONFIG)

Having said this, 2 minutes is not that long - but it could be better.

I think it's ok, maybe not optimum but still ok. It could probably be improved with the suggestions mentioned on the page linked below, read the entire page. Note what he says about msconfig.

Also, as mentioned by Ian, scanning for malware is a great idea. Do a Google for free malware utilities like Spybot S&D and Ad-aware.

Thanks ya all for sharing your thoughts on what mess I've done with my system. I guess I stuffed so much stuff in it that crapped my laptop's boot process. Long live thinpads............

My boot time is about 35 seconds without the wireless cardbus card plugged in and 50 seconds to a minute when its plugged in. Cait wait to see if 1GB RAM will make a difference.

It won't, I think, since at startup it's more the HDD that is important...

I finally figured out that removing Windows XP Plus' theme files was causing the slowdown in my boot time. I just got rid of it and my boot time went back to about half a minute.
