Adhoc internet sharing in XP with a T60?

#1 Post by propellen » Thu Feb 12, 2009 4:06 pm

Is anyone successfully sharing internet using ad-hoc network in Windows XP SP3?
What steps did you do?

I've followed this guide,
http://download.microsoft.com/download/ ... HocICS.doc
, with no luck.

I'm able to create the ad-hoc network. Sometimes it broadcasts so my other computer can see it, sometimes not.
When it's broadcasting I'm sometimes able to connect, however I'm never able to access the internet over the adhoc network.

There is so little consistency here, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, that I'm really starting to doubt my firewall/wifi driver!?

Suggestions would be appreciated :)

Hello,

I've had my share of trouble with WinXPSP2 and trying to share WWAN over AdHoc wifi. If you use AccessConnections, it's best to kill them before trying.

Nevertheless, when your computer is connected to the internet, only this should be required:
1) have an AdHoc connection ("profile") created and set to auto-connect
2) in properties of the network interface (or dialup profile) check Share this internet connection and if required, select the Wifi interface from list below (if possible)
3) verify (or make it so) that the wifi interface has assigned static IP 192.168.0.1, mask 255.255.255.0 - if collision is reported, say that you really want it so, or alternatively remove the IP from any other NIC you find it defined in.

Now it should be possible to connect to that AdHoc network and access the internet. Not sure about Windows-integrated firewall, that shouldn't prevent it, but if you have any other firewall, then you need to check its settings.

Thanks mate!

One part of my problem was that I didn't set my ad-hoc connection to auto-connect.
Second problem is my windows firewall. The firewall prevents me from accessing the internet. The temporary solution is to disable the firewall. Better than nothing, since i'm only using this adhoc network to give my telephone internet.

Does anyone know what to add to the firewall to be able to access the internet through an ad-hoc network?

Regardless,
MUCH love from Norway.
I've been twisting my head around on this!!

:D
