I need "old book" icons!

#1 Post by Bookworm » Wed Feb 25, 2009 7:24 pm

I read a lot. But then, I guess my user name probably told you that. I found a web site called "Project Gutenburg" (and misplaced the url imediately  ) with *thousands* of out of print books for free download!

If I'm going to organize all this, it would help if I had some nicer icons than the usual Notepad, Wordpad, Works, Word, WordPro, and <gag> PDF icons. Someting with a nice antique look, and a lot of variety, would be great.

If anyone knows where I can download lots of detailed, realistic icons like this, or where I can order them on CD or floppy, for Windows 98/2000, *Please* let me know! I think I've worn out all of the search engines. :(

(BTW I'm also interested in animated cursors, and cursors & icons related to musical instruments.)

In case that's not enough for you, try http://manybooks.net/ and http://books.google.com/

Thanks a lot for sharing with us about this project. Among other things, The Gutenberg project seems to store plenty of classical writings and books from different science fields as well. Some of them could be hardly found in such a good state (or even in a bad state) with most of the print being readable.

Thanks again,

Marin

This may or not be of interest, but Thinkpad R created current size notepad and other document icons based on original ThinkPad ones from back in the day.

Another approach:
do a Google with 'book icon' (without the quotes), then click on Images (top left).
On the line under the search field, set the boxes to: Images showing Small images and Clip-art.

This is just what I'm complaining about. Mostly cheap shiny plastic looking vista style icons, no books. I do like the "Antiques" set though. I'll use the TV for My Movies.

> do a Google with 'book icon'...(snip details)

Like I said, I already wore out the search engines. There are maybe half a dozen with the antique look I want, and they're all open or stacks. I want My books on the shelf. So what I need is a good icon editor that can copy and convert .gif, .bmp, .img, and .jpg images to icons. Then I can cut & paste a few of the old library pictures on flickr.com, resize them with MS Paint (Windows 2000 version can resize to the next desktop resolution up or down and you can't tell it's been changed. The '98 version just messes it up.) and make perfect icons to put on my antique bookshelf wallpaper.

If anyone else wants them, let me know and I'll send you a copy.

First, I'll need a good icon editor. I know where I can download several, but can anyone recommend a good one with the image conversion I need?
