Getting really confused by Vista's filing system

I've got Vista Home Premium 32 bit on my SL 500. Time and time again, something is throwing me for a loop and this is another of those instances. I hope someone can help me "get it."

I've started getting this message while trying to access many of my files. I'm the sole owner, administrator, user, author, etc. Whatever have I done to disallow my own self to not be able to access these files??



I don't recall changing anything and have tried to set allowable permissions for everyone on board as I'm the only one on this machine.....ever, yet to no avail.

Here's another box that pops up coming out of hibernation, sleep or just starting up.



Don't have a clue to this one either or how to resolve it. I wasn't looking for that file at all, nor did I type anything to try and look for it nor did I command Windows to do such. I've found the file, tried to open it, but it won't open. Can anyone help me out on these issues?

tpscrmsg.exe is for the full screen magnifier. FN-Space should engage it. If it doesn't work, and you don't want it to, I'd deinstall and reinstall the Lenovo hotkey driver, but deselect full screen magnifier. For the permissions problem, in Windows explorer, right-click on the drive icon, open the 'Properties' dialog, and select the 'Security' tab. Hi-lite 'Users', click 'Edit', and check 'Full Control' and Apply.

You've stumbled on YAAVI (Yet Another Annoying Vista Idiosyncracy).

You might well see a "My Documents" entry under C:/users/<you> but it is bogus. Look for a plain old Documents entry in the directory, and that's the one you want.

Thanks guys. I think you've helped me solve the problems .....for now anyway.

Kinda wished I'd opted for the XP Pro "downgrade" in a way. I suppose I could maybe clone my XP Pro serv.pk. 3 from my aging desktop. No discs, but it is "validated." I just just need to know specifically what files need to be transferred/used.

I guess that's a topic for another thread.

If it is an OEM installation, it is only licensed to run on that motherboard. (Unless it is an original XP-OEM-retail installation, in which case it can legally be attached to any on epiece of hardware including a simple screw.) But a real OEM version will only validate on the same series bios or motherboard, and can't be transferred.

WIth retail or retail-OEM versions, you can buy replacement media from the Microsoft Fulfillment Department (call MS's main 800# and ask) which will cos tabout $15 and come with no license, no codes,--just replacement for lost media. You use your existing COA with it.
