Google Chrome Browser on XP

Anyone using Google's Chrome Browser, on Windows XP?

I'd be interested in hearing what your experience has been like.

Have you had installation, or other issues that have caused problems?

How do you like Chrome?

Nice. Runs fast compared to both Firefox and IE. May get some time to used to it (afterall, you're switching, the same would be said if you switch from Chrome to IE). And the usual compatibility issues due to "IE-optimized" webpages.

Two things less than desirable through - 1) It install and run GoogleUpdate in the background; Though it can be manually disabled. 2) Doesn't respect the colour scheme, appears out of place if your colour scheme is not the default blue.

P.S. Oh if you use a Tablet than the TIP only works in the "Omni bar". And the "Beta"-channel releases has some nice features and seems stable enough, worth a try if you ask me.

What does GoogleUpdate do, and what are the reasons that one might turn it off?

It runs in the background and periodically checks if there's an update available, and updates the program if one is available.

Besides Chrome, some other Google programs utilize it as well. For more information:

I disabled it because I don't like every program running its own "auto-updater" (Adobe, Java...) and prefer to do the checks manually.

Besides, even if Google Update is disabled, Chrome will check for updates when it itself is running.

P.S. The codes of Google Update is open sourced recently. But I still don't like it running in the background for the reason stated above.

I think there should be one or at most, two, update service in a particular OS, if they have to be running in the background (i.e. even if the main program is not running) to handle all the core and 3rd party program updates but well, that's another topic... : )

I feel the same way, I always turn off all automatic update utilities, as I would much rather check manually, read the changelog if there is one, and then decide if I wish to update or not. I figured by the very name of it, that's what it probably did. Nonetheless I wanted to ask you just to see from a real world standpoint just what your experience was like with it.

I use it and like it, but have run across a few websites that do not operate properly, for example, I cannot get the detect function on Lenovo.com to detect my Thinkpad type and model. Maybe it's a problem with active X or java? Other than that (which is a big thing if you own a bunch of Thinkpads), works well.

The model detection on the lenovo site is ActiveX, and works only with IE (or Firefox with an IE-rendered window, which is the same thing). No other browser supports, or should be expected to support, ActiveX. The same is true of Windows update. But all you need to do is bookmark the link for your model's page an you never need to go through the model detection again; aside from that Lenovo's site has worked fine for me in all three browsers.

IETab on Firefox is great for sites like this (or Microsoft.com, or any of the Oracle business applications), as Firefox can remember the site name and automatically render with IETab. Is there a similar plug-in for Chrome?

I really like Chrome. At first I was unsure about it but after I used it for the week after the release I dumped Firefox and kept Chrome. I find I will still occasionally have problems with embedded content (mostly just videos) but it works way more than not.

i used the "iron" version of chrome in vista (there is a version for xp ) quite happy with it after getting used to it. it is basically the chrome core with little modification.
