The file assocaition is broken. Pick Explorer.exe to open it. You may have to browse to C:\Windows\Explorer.exe
If Explorer.exe is not there you have bigger problems.

Thanks, that does the trick, however it won't let me select "always use this to open the file".
Is it easy enough to do something? i can put up with browsing for explorer.exe everytime i suppose.

I would think that something as basic as double-clicking on "Local Disk (C:)" would be pre-defined somewhere deep within Windows itself. I suppose that it might be possible that a registry setting controls this and has now become corrupted. If you can remember the last time when it worked and your system has System Restore enabled, then you could try rolling back to that time. You will lose whatever program installs that have occurred since then so I would consider this before using the System Restore function.

Also, since this sounds like something a virus/malware would do, I'd run a full system scan to see if there's something that shouldn't be there.

A quick Google around the web shows agreement with this being caused by a virus. These two methods (try the second if the first doesn't work) may help with the damage it caused, but of course won't do anything about an infection...
From a command prompt, enter:
c:\> attrib -r -s -h autorun.inf
c:\> del autorun.inf

No effect/could not find the file?
Try this from a command prompt:

regsvr32 /i shell32.dll

I agree. If it is not remembering your choice it is probably a virus/spyware causing the problem.
