New System Update UP AND RUNNING

#1 Post by StarSheep » Mon Jun 01, 2009 5:27 am

Hi all,

as of now the new System Update is up and running and so far it works almost flawlessly, same feature set as before the shutdown end of March 2009.
I am updating a T500 right now for testing and so far no problem at all.
Attach you find a short discription what you need to do:

1.) Run System Update and there will be an update available for SU and Message Center Plus
2.) Install both and reboot to be safe.
3.) Run System Update and you will probably get this error message:http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/5074/clipboard02l.png
4.) The problem lies within Vista SP2, which ist also installed on my system and SU doesn't recognize it. Lenovo should fix this soon I hope.
5.) The solution lies in this file: c:\Program Files\Lenovo\System Update\session\system\SSClientCommon\MappingInterface.xml
In the OSs section the entry for SP2 is missing. You need to adapt the file according to YOUR SYSTEM OS. Just add it at the end of the OSs section.
I have Vista Ultimate installed so it looks like this:

<OS>
<OSTVIA>VS-HOMEULT.SP2</OSTVIA>
<OSeGatherer>
<Name>Vista Home Ultimate</Name>
<ServiceRelease>Service Pack 2</ServiceRelease>
</OSeGatherer>
<OSQuest>Windows Vista</OSQuest>
</OS>

For Vista Business it looks like this:
<OS>
<OSTVIA>VS-BUS.SP2</OSTVIA>
<OSeGatherer>
<Name>Vista Business</Name>
<ServiceRelease>Service Pack 2</ServiceRelease>
</OSeGatherer>
<OSQuest>Windows Vista</OSQuest>
</OS>

The easiest way is just to copy the according section and add it at the end of the OSs section with the change to SP2.
After adding the lines above the error was gone and SU found the updates with no problem.
I'd like to that szabie form the Lenovo forums for this hint: Source: http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/mess ... ng&page=19

However the thread is already over 20 pages long so I though it is easier that way ;-)

Happy Updating

Regards
StarSheep

PS: IMPORTANT: These instructions onyl refer to an UNMODIFIED SU. If you changed your registry setting to a local database you need to change it back to SUPPORTCENTER for SU to work !!!!!!!

PSS: Please keep in mind that this mod is NOT supported by Lenovo, so it is ar your own risk ;-)

Thanks for the legwork.

Kinda scary, that Lenono is making the same boneheaded programming errors (enumerating SPs and making no provision for future ones--the sure sign of a really inexperienced programmer at work) that MS has been chewed out for in the past, frequently enough. And perhaps scarier, that Lenono thinks there is a "Home Ultimate" version of Vista, when Microsoft thinks "Home" has nothing to do with "Ultimate".

I'll be the usual blue babboon is anyone can show me where my Vista-32 Ultimate OS is identified as a "Home" edition, in either the sales literature or the internal coding anyplace in the OS.

There is nothing whatsoever bone-headed about describing the set of specifically supported Operating System platforms in a system update tool. :roll:

"vista home ultimate" is the correct name for the OS.   microsoft's marketing department decided to drop "home" from the ultimate packaging to make people feel better about it.

this is the correct nomenclature:
vista home
vista home premium
vista home ultimate
vista business
vista enterprise

it's not just lenovo who thinks there is a home ultimate version.   microsoft thinks it, too, as does everyone else in the industry writing apps that check for specific builds of vista.

Bill, bone-headed implies a certain "thick as a brick" lack of perception to me, not just a dumb mistake, so I'm not sure I'd call it that. And yes, I can appreciate that anal-compulsive coding requires preparing solutions only to known problems, which means specific OSes and no provision for expanding the list. We also call that 'dead' because it makes no provision for the future that is sure to come.

A better program would generate an error condition and error message, that says "Your OS is too new...yadayada" instead of simply FAILING with an error message that tells the user nothing.

Better still, the program would be checking itself for updates--which the vendor SHOULD have already issued--or at least offering the user other options, like "OS is too new for this version, using it may cause catastrophic meltdown and the end of the world as we know it. Proceed or abort?"

I'm just saying, there are options, and a dead end and a bogus error message that indicates internal corruption of some kind, is not one of them. It is NOT ACCEPTABLE PROGRAMMING for the consumer market.

erik-
Since MS Marketing is the one, right or wrong, that puts names on products...Pas I asked before, please show me anyplace within the product that can substantiate the correct name as being "Home Ultimate" rather than simply Ultimate. Anything that shows the code, or any other functional property, is derived from the Home versions rather than the business versions. If the OS is queried for a product name, does it come back and reply "Home Ultimate" somewhere?
An MS OS is just like a box of CrackerJack, always a surprise inside. Except, CrackerJack rarely bit me.
