My computer came with Diskeeper already installed. Is Diskeeper a good program for disk defragmenting? Or is there a better program?

I find the Diskeeper that comes installed with newer laptops to work fine. I always use it when installed.

I've put Auslogics Disk Defrag on all my machines; it's freeware. My recollection is that it was faster and less finicky than Diskkeeper, but I'd be hard-pressed to tell you the specifics due to the timespan.

Diskeeper that came with Windows is OK but not great. It's a castrated version of a program that used to be quite good.
For best results get Raxco's PerfectDisk http://www.perfectdisk.com/
On the cheap, that mentioned Auslogics pgm is quite acceptable.

I use the mentioned Auslogics also. Works fast...

With the new version of Diskeeper, the software will automatically defrag the hard drives whenever the CPU is idling. It is an installed-and-forget operation. This means there is no scheduled defraging required. Your hard drives are always in as near perfect condition as possible. To me, that is worth paying for.

All the older versions of DK did this as well.
You sitll get a better result with PerfectDisk.
But with HDs the way they are today, defragmenting is not as important as it used to be.
Run such a program once a month, and your lappy will be happy.

IMO, Diskeeper is the best defragger out there. Do you have the full version? The automatic background defrag is really useful and once set, you really dont need to bother about defragging manually. The 09 version is said under low free space as well. I have it running on my laptop and definitely recommend it.

I'm the one who recommended Auslogics. An observation, if I might:

I'm not sure that automatic defrag when the computer is not busy is a good thing for a laptop, especially knowing how sensitive many folks here are to the subtle noises such as fan noise that are associated with laptops. That's long been a complaint about Windows indexing - you're sitting at your desktop, concentrating on your screen, and the disk starts clattering away when you're expecting total silence. This DiskKeeper behavior seems to raise the same issue.

I get Symantec corporate free from my employer, and have taken it off most of my machines due to the heavy disk activity due to unsuppressible startup scans (not fixed by the registry hack to fix it!) that similarly cause annoying noise when I expect the machine to shut up. Let me have this stuff run when I don't have to be around, or have deliberately initiated it.

But as far as recommending these programs goes, allow me to throw another
free one into the mix. On one of my TPs I've been happy with Piriform's
Defraggler, and use it in conjunction with its stablemate, CCleaner (with my
usual caveat that I avoid CC's Registry cleaner).

I used to use Defraggler but like I said I now use Auslogics defraggler.

Not to hijack this thread but why do you avoid CCleaner? I've used it for years.

You misunderstood me...I said I use CCleaner but avoid using its "Registry Integrity" tool.

I'm growing increasingly wary of running Registry cleaners too often in general, and in particular
this one because it lists dozens and dozens of Registry problems that do not turn up when I use
several other such scanners. In the case of the Registry, I prefer to err on the side of caution.
