Question about recovery discs

#1 Post by thinkpac » Tue Jun 30, 2009 10:17 am

I just bought some recovery discs off ebay for my T60.

According to the item description, they are "New, Sealed in Box", and it says "Set 3: T60 T60p-Windows XP P SP2 - 7 CD/DVDs". I saw another guy on this forum selling recovery sets, and he also sold a 7-disc set for XP, so that matched up.

But then the seller sent me an email and said "ALL 7 cds recovery set have been replaced to 1CD1DVD set."

I emailed him back and asked if they are genuine Lenovo discs or burned copies, and he said "All discs are burned by China Lenovo authorized service center. But they are burned-able discs."

So what do you think? Will I be getting legitimate discs, or a pirated version?

Speaking only for myself I would never buy recovery discs from ebay. The chances of you getting the real thing are slim. This scenario sounds very suspicious. Personally I am happy to pickup the phone, call Lenovo tech support, and order the disc set from them for approx $45.00 including shipping. Then I _know_ I'm paying for legal media of recovery software that matches my exact ThinkPad model. I get discs that work properly, are labeled for my computer and add value to the sale if and when I decide to sell it.

(What? me sell a ThinkPad... :P )

Hope this helps you.

Cheers...

Would that be any different than someone here sending a set of recovery discs to another member with the same machine, which I once did. Your COA, which I assume you have, is what makes it legit, not how Windows was installed. Just my own 2¢.

I thought I had read that Lenovo will only sell you recovery discs if the system is still under warranty. Mine is no longer under warranty.

This is true. I'm simply saying that ebay is not as honest and reliable as someone here. If one has plenty of time to burn, in the event it becomes a problem than perhaps it's worth that gamble. Look at what he's being told, that's what made me suspicious.

Cheers... :)

I've purchased discs from Lenovo for my ThinkPads which are out of warranty. Perhaps there is a new rule in the last two months (the last time I bought discs) or so that I am unaware of.

There will be no argument from me on that one.

The seller offered me a refund, which I accepted. And I called Lenovo and they did sell me the recovery discs even though it's out of warranty! Total cost was a little over $50, after shipping + taxes.

Just got my official Lenovo discs (8 total).

I noticed that one of the discs - the one that you have to boot off of - has a little dot on the top (the data side). And when I move my finger over the dot, I can feel something there, so it seems to be a physical defect on the disc.

Now my paranoia is kicking in, and I wonder if that physical defect might have affected the data on that disc? How can I be sure that the reinstall of the OS works fine? I don't want to be running into strange errors months down the road, because something got copied over to the hard drive incorrectly.

Paranoia is a problem for some people. For others it makes them a fortune. Ozzy Osbourne made a fortune from the song 'Paranoid'. :)

If the Recovery process from the discs run without errors, and does a successful boot into the Desktop, it should be OK.

A defect in the medium would cause an error during the recovery and you would definitely know something is wrong.

You will know within the first hour, it won't show up weeks/months later.
