Intel chipset support for Windows XP - ThinkPad T30????

#1 Post by robert213 » Thu Jul 02, 2009 1:53 pm

Intel chipset support for Windows 98/2000/XP - ThinkPad T30, X30
MIGR-44310

Where do I find the list of driver details in [Control Panel][System][Hardware][Device Manager]? Is it in the listing for "Computer" (between "Batteries" and "Disk Drives")?

Is it related to Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC?

[Properties][Driver]
Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC
Microsoft 7/1/2001 5.1.2600.0

[Driver Details]
C:\WINDOWS\system32
hal.dll
ntkrnlpa.exe
ntoskrnl.exe

The reason that I am asking is that I read in MIGR-44310...
Notes:
- If you use the Product Recovery function shipped with your ThinkPad to restore the Windows preload environment, you do not need this package. This package is required when you install Windows Operating Systems without the Product Recovery function.
I re-installed Windows XP Pro on my T30 using IBM Product Recovery CD version 5.7. However, I am not able to locate where the Windows XP Intel Chipset updates have been done.

--Edit--
I am in the middle of reinstalling Windows XP on my GF's Dell D620 (using a new HD, so I can't lose any previous files) -- and I can't determine which version of Intel Chipset updates that was used on her old original HD.

I usually use the latest applicable ones from Intel's support site.

For the D620's ...

http://support.intel.com/support/chipse ... 025753.htm

It's probably a GM965 (Intel Graphics) or PM965 (Descrete Nvidia graphics). Either way, it's the same install for the chipset.

The current version is 9.0.0.1008 and supports the following...

You need (or your strong should) install the Intel Mobile Chipset drivers. The ones from the Intel website would probably be OK. My preference is to install the latest ones from support.dell.com . Dell recommends that you still install the Intel Mobile Chipset drivers. The Dell O/S CD is very much clean. I don't believe it does much more than a retail or OEM copy of XP does (except for the fact on a Dell system, the Dell CD preactivates your OS for you, which is nice).

The Dell Drivers and Application CD (the one you mention in you post as it's the other disc after the Operating system disc) has a HTML file that loads as an "autorun" when you insert the CD. This page gives you a run down of the order you should install things (what to do first, what to install second, and so one). You don't necessarily need to install the older versions off of the CD. You could use them as a checklist sorts, then install the latest ones from support.dell.com in the order cited from the autorun menu.

At a bare minimum I would install the following:
1. Intel Mobile Chipset drivers from support.dell.com
2. Dell Notebook System Software (these are drivers, not bloatware). You are advised to consider installing these. They really help in most situations. It has updated drivers for the docking station hardware, if you use a dock.
3. Video drivers from support.dell.com
4. Wireless Driver from support.dell.com
5. Bluetooth driver, if you have one.
6. Latest BIOS from support.dell.com
7. If you run an external projector for presentations, consider installing the Dell Quickset Utility. Quickset is optional. In helps cure issues where the computer has problems going from docked to undocked to projector, back to docked and not forget its display settings.
We use it at work and it cures more issues than it creates (it doesn't seen to cause any problems, but you never know).

If you need to install the modem drivers, I find that I need to install the HDAudio drivers, first, reboot, then install the modem drivers. Depending on what version of XP you used you might need to install the LAN (ethernet network) drivers. I usually inject mine with Sysprep.

Some other pieces of info that I've discovered...

A1. Installed Hardware Device Drivers (Dell D620)
C:\Dell\Drivers

A2. Installed Hardware Device Drivers (IBM T30)
C:\Drivers
C:\I386

B. Regarding Display/Video hardware device drivers, there are two sets...
1) One set for Video Chipset
a. My guess is that these are *.inf files in C:\Windows folders

2) Another set for Video Graphics Controller
a. Related Program File folders...
C:\Program Files\Intel\INFIinst\readme.txt
C:\Intel\Logs\IntelGFX.txt
C:\Program Files\Dell\Chipset Software Installer\

b. [Control Panel][Add or Remove Programs]
Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator Driver
