Thinkpad won't turn off display Fn+F3 when playing...

#1 Post by ninjaronin18 » Fri Aug 14, 2009 2:28 am

Thinkpad won't turn off display Fn+F3 when playing Windows Media Player. Checked Fn+F3 via Power Manager, it is set to turn off the display. I also tried to turn off display via Power Manager manually. No luck. Not a biggie, but what could be the problem?

AFAIK, this is normal. You can't turn off the display when a video is playing - regardless of the player.

No, there's no video. Just music playing. I think I remember turning off the display when music was playing prior to my fresh install of xp pro. Also, the dialog windows pops up and says: Preparing to turn the monitor off..Please wait... (something like that), but just hangs there and nothing happens.

It isn't normal, at least not in case of my T60 running Vista. I'm able to turn off the screen using Fn+F3 no matter if Windows Media Player (11) is running or not, playing or not, video or music, in foreground or in background. There is no dialog box that I can see.

Yeah, it works when WMP is running, but not when music is playing. Strange, I don't know what the problem is. Doesn't make sense.

As I recall, one of the optional WMP settings prevents a screensaver from kicking in during playback. Perhaps it also affects Fn-F3 and the setting is active since the reinstall.

Yes there is such an option (allow screen saver during playback). I had it disabled and have just enabled it to see if it affects the Fn+F3 is any way. Well, it doesn't, I can turn off the monitor no matter how I set this option.

Maybe it has something to do with the codecs? I'm using ffdshow. Or maybe gfx drivers? My specs are in the sig.

Checking the box did the trick! Thanks!

Nice to see you solved the problem.

Yak--perhaps a difference in OS from XP Pro to Vista Ultimate accounts for why it works for you.

Sorry if this is a little off topic, but information on this subject seems pretty difficult to find.

I have read somewhere that it is a know fact Fn+F3 is not working on Windows 7 (I will edit my post when I find the source).

Do you have any info on thi ? This is very annoying, as it my main way to save power (I have a SSD in a X41 tablet).
