windows XP doesnt keep time correctly

#1 Post by snickervicker » Wed Feb 09, 2005 7:10 pm

This is happening on my old XP, and I know i need to replace the CMOS battery. But XP can also sync to an internet time server, problem is I cant figure out a way to get it to sync more than once a week. My time goes off by hours within a day, any ideas? thanks!

It may not be the CMOS battery. The Windows clock is based on software, and is not very reliable. This is a different than the hardware RTC on the system board.

I have a Windows XP install on my desktop Athlon box. For some reason it always gets 4-5 minutes ahead. However, when I reboot into BIOS to check the hardware clock, it is almost exactly in sync with my ThinkPad and alarm clock.

Still, if the system is old, replacing the CMOS battery may be a good idea. Plus, you can eliminate that as the source of the problem if the new battery has no effect.
